The HD598 should be a able to play with just the PC SC and or straight from your phone. It does get a little better when amped, though. I can't really answer your other question, sorry.

  Yea, you're right. I'm really enjoying the HE400, but I very much agree on the head-band hurting! I may have to buy this head-band on Amazon, and just put it over the original to make the headphone more comfortable. Oh, and yea, I could also hear the flaws on some songs. I didn't think this...

Doesn't the HD598 have more forward mids, though? I mean, I feel like they do have better mids, but the HE-400 are very close to them... It could also be that I don't know anything about headphones, after all. My life has been a lie! lol 

I sincerely can't hear that harsh treble that everyone talks about, in the HE400... Maybe I'm not listening to the right songs? lol   Also, the mid's don't feel that recessed to me... Could it be because the best headphones that I've heard are only the HE-400 and HD598's?
