    Strange problem with USB DAC

Their first reply, after I stated my situation and trouble-shooting attempts, was just that it sounded like a system-related issue.  When I tried to probe a bit more and asked if anyone else had experienced similar issues with Windows 8 and/or iTunes, here is the email reply from Schiit:  ...

    Strange problem with USB DAC

Schiit responded quickly, but didn't have too much to add.  We're basically chocking it up as "one of those" things with Windows.  That's just sorta the life of a Windows user: some things are conditionally operational, and you never really know when a future update to the OS, drivers, or...

    Strange problem with USB DAC

I've tried all variety of the different bit and sampling rates, and changing that seems to have no effect on the clicking issue.  Whether I run at the lowest option (16 bit, 44.1 kHz) or the highest option (24 bit, 96 kHz), it clicks about the same amount and opening/closing Chrome has the same...

    Strange problem with USB DAC

Thanks for the feedback from everyone that has been chiming in.  I've sent an email to Schiit to see what they say.   I'm guessing it's some strange iTunes/Windows 8 issue though, and it may just keep working with this iTunes+Chrome combo.  It's actually giving me great audio quality in this...

    Strange problem with USB DAC

If I have Chrome running before starting iTunes, then it does not click.  So it is not the act of opening Chrome, but rather just having Chrome open.   Also, I just updated my iTunes to version 11.1.2.32, but that didn't change anything.

    Strange problem with USB DAC

Thank you for the reply, cel.   Yes, I have already set these parameters in both the Windows advanced playback properties and in iTunes playback preferences.  And you are correct that you must restart iTunes before any such playback changes take effect (to be safe, I have also tried rebooting...

    Strange problem with USB DAC

The behavior is proving to be repeatable.  Through multiple reboots and closing and reopening of Chrome and iTunes, the behavior is consistently the same: When Chrome is open, the audio played by iTunes does not suffer from "clicking" problems.  When Chrome is not open, the audio played by...

    Strange problem with USB DAC

I recently purchased a new Windows 8.1 desktop PC and combined it with a Schiit Modi USB DAC.  I frequently experience clicks in the audio playback, but with rather peculiar behavior. I'm fairly certain that the "clicks" I hear are due to insufficient data being sent to the USB DAC, so that it...

Help building around a vintage Marantz 2225 receiver

Bah, sorry, I've had a PC failure and need to replace that instead getting a dac and headphone amp.  Thank you for the tips on the Schiit and Fiio products.  I'll keep those things in mind when I get a chance to come back to this.

Help building around a vintage Marantz 2225 receiver

That's good advice. I'll have a tough choice now when the E17 I ordered arrives: open it, or send it back and pick up a dedicated desktop DAC either for less money or higher quality. I may not ever bother carrying around a portable DAC anyway. I was thinking E17 wouod be a good versatile first...

Help building around a vintage Marantz 2225 receiver

Although if it even comes close, I will be perfectly satisfied for this setup. I really don't need to start collecting vinyl LPs right now! :p

Help building around a vintage Marantz 2225 receiver

Heh, well I'd sure hope it could beat the smartphone! I'll have to see though how a relatively lossless digital source (CDs in this case) with a quality DAC providing line level input to an amp stacks up against a turntable providing phonograph-level input.

Help building around a vintage Marantz 2225 receiver

Thanks for the replies. That makes me feel more comfortable about getting some good headphones to try out and ordering that DAC. I went in a different direction with speakers, though, and am rather glad I did. I started tracking eBay and craigslist for vintage speakers. I found a good...

Help building around a vintage Marantz 2225 receiver

Quick Synopsis: I have a vintage Marantz 2225 that I really want to put into a decent sound system and need advice on picking headphones, speakers and DAC to complement it within a ~$500 budget.  My most pertinent question for a headphone forum is: which headphones (preferably open...
