Since you can't really apply EQ to straight DSD data, you would have to, in realtime, convert DSD to PCM, apply EQ and then send the new PCM data to the DAC or even convert it back to DSD.  Seems like a lot of CPU work for something so trivial.  Does anyone know how it works in the real world...

Does it really matter?  The way I see it, if you lower the levels on a digital signal before it gets sent to a DAC its as if it were done during mastering so unless you're playing back really really loudly it shouldn't really make any difference whether you control volume at the source...

Well the Alpine head unit isn't a true 'desktop' USB DAC I think.  There might be some proprietary Apple protocols at play but all my searching hasn't turned up whats really going on.

Does anyone know what the DAC is inside the Apple 5s dock?  Maybe the same as the 30pin adapter?

This is confirmed working:   IP4 > Generic 30pin extension cable > CCK > USB powered HUB > PCM2704 DAC   The item to note is the 30pin generic extension cable.  It doesn't have any identification circuitry so its a direct pass through unlike the Apple LOD which does not pass through USB...

Are there any small and free tools that can load a file and render its waveform.  Bonus if it can highlight any samples that are 0dbFS or any arbitrary level.

Pardon my ignorance on DSD but why is sony releasing a DSD capable DAC? Is there some channel for people to get -Sony- DRM DSD content? I think I'm just going to pick up one of those $30 USB isolators and not do any guesswork on the part of a hub.
