K701 significant upgrade over a900 for music?

I just got the a900's, and I like them better than most of my other headphones. ...of course, I just got them, so it's probably partly new toy euphoria. But one interesting thing to do with them is equalize them - turn on the equalizer and bump up the mids, like this -...

    Best headphones for me

At least here in Minnesota, Guitar Center lets you try on headphones. They carry closed and semi-closed headphones, but not open ones. I know they carry the Senn 280's. I haven't had a problem finding places that carry Grado's that let me try them, but I don't anywhere specific to New Jersey.

    Bose headphones...overpriced and crappy sound?

Actually...I tried the quiet comfort 2's again the other day and it got me thinking. My problem with a lot of the headphones that are recommended here is that they often produce detailed music which lacks body and impact. That's something I *always* get from speakers - and I mean the crappy...

    Headphone Ethics?

Between the fact that open headphones have crappy sound when in a noise environment, and the fact that they often really annoy other people, I vastly prefer closed headphones for public use. I was trying to work in a coffee shop a while back, and a guy sat next to me with open headphones and...

    Argh! My music sounds atrocious...

I don't like being all contradictory, but I know that when I tried it, the same pair of headphones sounded noticably crappier when I used them on a plan versus using them in my apartment. They sounded pretty good at home and around town, but they sounded very undetailed and crappy when used with...

    Advice for studio phones

Honestly, the one person I know who actually does studio work says everyone uses the Sony MDR-7506 headphones for studio work. They're also the one pair of headphones from Sony that people from this forum tend to like (well, unlike the 600 and 700 dj's).

Non-USB Amp, USB DAC: Can it be done?

Although this may not pertain to you, in another thread a while back someone was asking about using the Bithead's dac with the Micro Amp. A headroom guy said there wasn't a whole lot of improvement in doing it that way, as the bithead amp wasn't incredibly better than the micro amp. He said...

Total BitHead: Of Batteries And Cables

"Bones13" - when the USB is plugged in, it only uses USB power if the power switch is off. If you turn the power switch on, it uses battery power - I've read this several places, and it certainly seems to work this way on mine. Secondly, I've heard some things about alkalines doing better...

Of the cans I've personally tried, I can't find anything I like better than the AKG k81dj's.

Best Full Sized Headphone for Unamped Portable Use ?

If you're looking for over-the-ear headphones for comfort, then ignore my recommendation. But if you're looking for over-the-ear headphones for isolation, I'd recommend the AKG k81dj's. They're my favorite headphones, and they isolate better, actually, than my Beyer 250-80's.

Grado sound in a close can?

I would also say the AKG k81dj's. They're the only exciting, yet fairly detailed cans I've found yet. I also have the beyer 250-80's, and I personally found them boring.

Semi-portable amp with energy and kick?

Thanks for all your replies, I'll be looking into them. The only thing I really miss is that I really wish I could actually try out these amps before buying them, but it's notoriously hard to even find the headphones we discuss, much less the amps, plus I'm in Minnesota... Thanks!

    Best closed cans?

The k81dj's - incredible value. Music has a lot of kick and presense. Loses some "smoothness" in return. These are my favorites, as I like my music to sound exciting. Senn 280's - when I tried these out I found they lack detail in the vocals I like, so I didn't buy them. Beyer 250 - I have...

Sony MDR-V6 - way too bright

If you thought the V6 was "way to bright", I'm sure there are plenty of cans around here you'd like. Personally, I tried them out (mine wre the Sony 7506's, which I'm told are exactly the same heaphones) vs my k81dj, and I really enjoyed them. The 7506's had the shine and detail in the upper end...
