Been using the 903 for over a year and gotta say these are amazing. Prefer it over my iems (ortofon eq-5). More comfortable and has a mid range forward sound that appeals to me.

how do these sound (direct headphne out) in comparison to older sony players?  particularly s739.  i don't care about hi-res.

is it really limited to 192kbps wma standard only?  i'm trying to do high bit rate vbr wma on s739 and it doesn't work.  ive tried both standard and pro codecs.  currently using fraunhofer aac preset 6 but i think wma pro sounds better and would like to use that if at all possible.

i don't know about the flatcap2x, but i use an old olive series hi-cap with mine and is easily the best i've heard, prefer it over even ear hp4!   the sound has quite a bit of character, you'll either love it or hate it, no in between, like grado.  i use rs-1 for what its worth...

with that front end you heard them through even the shittiest headfones should sound good!   i think you might just be too fussy.  or perhaps you're too attached to the too close for comfort sound from etys?

i compared using -q0 vs -q9 which turns off all these tuning methods not only did turning everything off encode MUCH faster, but it sounds better to me as well. perhaps my hearing is not human lol, but it sounds more immediate vs high quality setting.
