Rockbox for iPOD Video 5th 5.5th mSATA SSD MOD
Seems very odd that the team have not put this in the main fork after all these years and the nature of iMods, making the modified software necessary. They have their reasons I suppose.- wportre

Rockbox for iPOD Video 5th 5.5th mSATA SSD MOD
Brilliant: thanks for keeping this flame burning. Much appreciated as I am still struggling for stability. What's the basic trick to overcome the ATA errors the standard build gives on mSATA drives; build it onto one?- wportre

PSB M4U 2
I had mixed experience driving these at home from my analogue amp (see above) but just drove them from my new Fiio E17 taking the optical SPDIF feed from my Denon CD player and I am a HAPPY BOY. Polica: Give You The Ghost (current fave album). Wow. Just knock spots off everything else I own.- wportre

PSB M4U 2
Quote: Exactly: the pads are soft so the clamping force ends up going from the driver covers to my pinneas. I have a hack, which is to insert a roughly 7mm ring of dense foam under the lip of the pads, which helps, but the M4U2s are much less comfortable than QC15s or ANC7s and it's not...- wportre

@searchy: they sound faulty although I suppose you could try fiddling with seating batteries etc. Agree on the better sound than QC15s. If by static you mean hiss, it bothers me too but I only get it on NC. On NC, it is enormous to my ears and far worse than QC15 or ANC7b. However fairly low...- wportre

@JimBob: yes, I was referring to your issue. Sorry. On the same note, you're in the UK, so it's unlikely, but have you ruled out static discharge of some sort?- wportre

It may be something to do with that mute function on the M4U2s, which only kicks in in noise cancelling mode. When I release mine, the "wobble" on the drivers is really alarming; feels like they're moving a huge distance. So does swapping cables have any impact? And I'm sure you have and...- wportre

All this talk is making me nervous. The plastic band is cosmetic, isn't it, with a steel spring underneath? Yet you have lost grip? (I have visions of a bandage solution, like something out of "The Mummy"...) Is it a structural, as opposed to a cosmetic, problem? And is there any way of telling...- wportre

Headphones on the plane (again)
If you don't mind the extracost , the ER4PT gives outstanding isolation BUT you'll be more comfortable lying down in the Shures. I bought a pair for exactly this reason and have modded them with Sugru. This gives pretty decent isolation (but nothing like the Etys which let's be clear are a world...- wportre

Cool, yes: I'm just throwing out ideas and as you say it's all very personal but designed to help those who are thinking of spending their cash. Let us know how you get on on planes.- wportre

Absolutely, so it's horses for courses; whether you'd use an amp on another set, whether you'd want controls on an amp, the ability to drive off the dock outlet of an iPod etc. There is a weight consideration, of course. It's arguably minor; 362g plays 340g, but you're already way up there (eg...- wportre

To be clear, based on the tests at another site, and my ears agree, the M4Us have far and away the best SQ, even better than my Etymotic ER4Ps.- wportre

PSB M4U 2
Quote: Based on a couple of themes in this thread, the M4U 1 with an amp seems the way to go. Based on my A/Bs, the noise cancellation of the 2s is far inferior to the Bose QC15s and my Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7Bs, and the ANC hiss is BAD. They're also far less portable and it seems like...- wportre

Fair enough, but that does knock out the noise reduction mode. At least the M4Us have a passive mode; your reply suggests that eg Bose QC15s can never be used as "normal" headphones in a headphone jack.- wportre

Hmm. With apologies, I now cannot fully replicate the passive problem. The noise is still immense on active but for that I blame the amp. Based on a lot of painful experience debugging, I switched the adapter and the distortion in passive mode cleared, even when going back to the original...- wportre

PSB M4U 2
I've been driving my new M4U 2s off my iPod. Good stuff, although the sound reduction is not what it might be in some situations. But that's not really why I bought them so no biggie. But I plugged into my Denon DRA-455 and disaster. This is a room-system amp with a headphone jack as opposed to...- wportre
