Which planar headphones has the best bass slam?
For me it's the Abyss which I idiotically sold. Nothing that I've heard comes even close to the bass speed/slam.- aphex27

Listening a lot to AAL, Plini, Scale the Summit etc at the moment. What would you say is the money-is-no-object best headphones for this style?- aphex27

Jude thanks so much for taking the time to solve my problem! Joe (from Abyss) contacted me, guessing that I had plugged the Abyss into the 1/4" jack instead of the XLR.. of course he was right..and problem solved :)- aphex27

Thanks Jude, unfortunately same level with youtube. I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong because full volume with high gain on the 430 has about the same loudness as full volume on the McInstosh D100 with the Abyss.. and my understanding is that the 430 is much more powerful.- aphex27

Thanks, but there's nothing to mess up..As long as the Mac recognises the Moon, volume control goes to the Moon. Only place where I can change the volume on the computer side is in Tidal, and I have it at 100%.- aphex27

I meant that you will have different dB levels at the same volume setting depending on the headphones. I'm very careful with my ears too :) Lv 80 with low gain, I would describe as medium to high volume with the Abyss..- aphex27

Thanks! :) Do you mean at 80? Also, does it go loud enough with your headphones? Yeah, I know..mid 70s is ok with the high gain but I was expecting this thing to be a beast..to be at ear-splitting levels even at half volume..but it's nowhere near that even at full volume with high...- aphex27

Moon Nēo 430HA Reference Headphone Amplifier
I have a question for the 430HAD owners.. Mine arrived yesterday but it feels it doesn't have enough power for the Abyss. Depending on the track, I have to go up to 80 in low gain and mid 70s in high gain. My connection is through USB.. Clearly I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure...- aphex27

Nice review! However you are wearing your Abyss wrong. The fit should be absolutely nothing like the LCD-3. Try to make them touch your ears as little as possible. Then you will understand how immensely superior to the LCD-3 they are.- aphex27

I don't agree with this analogy. The looks/perception/construction of the Abyss are not as refined as the SR-009s but the sound certainly is. Even more so. Somehow the Abyss makers took all the good parts of statics (refinement, quickness) and all the good parts of planars (deep textured bass...- aphex27

I haven't received mine yet, but my answer for all DACs is that upsampling does nothing at best (makes things worse sometimes). Better to match the source output.- aphex27

Having sold my SR-009s after I got the Abyss, I can tell you the Abyss are a completely different experience. The Stax were the finest headphones I had heard, everything was amazing. But the sound was still right next to your eyes. With the Abyss, the music is in front of you. I listen to a...- aphex27
