DIY Woody Grado/Symphones Magnums - A build diary

Well, they get more head time than my Vintage RS1s and my HF2s combined.  These days i try not to do to much critical listening and just enjoy the music ... otherwise i end up spending too much money on things i didn't know i needed :P

DIY Woody Grado/Symphones Magnums - A build diary

Well, if by 'finished' you mean that i have no more i want to do to them, then no, they aren't ... but that's not to say that i'm not listening to them on a daily basis.   I made up some temporary grilles out of a couple of computer fan guards, to at least make them look semi presentable as...

DIY Woody Grado/Symphones Magnums - A build diary

Sorry not replied for a while. Had some issues with the lacqer so i had to sand back down to bare wood and start again with the shellac. Weather has gotten pretty cold again so i havn't been doing too much lately, although i probably have enough coats to be presentable, but not quite as finished...

3x 1920*1080 ... so 5760*1080. I play most games with bezel correction at 6038*1080, although you only see 5760, the extra pixels are hidden behind the monitors' bezels so that diagonal lines look right.

Thanks all, pretty happy with them so far, although i'm doing some remedial work on one of them, the other i've put some satin lacqer on which has taken the glass like shine right off, i'll see about taking some photos later. Quote:   Yes outdoors, in evening daylight.  In an ideal...

DIY Woody Grado/Symphones Magnums - A build diary

Well the gods of procrastination have finally smiled and i've started to finish (...erm) these at last.  I've had the shellac mixed up (it comes in dry flakes that disolve in spirits) for ages, but never got around to taking the cans apart to paint it on.   Anyway, so far these have had five...

It needed to be enlarged afterwards on the lathe.  i could probably have used a 44 but didn't want to chance it being too big and the driver falling all the way in.

    Making Woody Grados. HELP!

2 inch think should be more than enough to make a set of cups, the ones i make are about 40mm (sorry to mix imperial and metric) end to end and about 62mm across.  If you start with a chunk of wood fairly close to the finished size (within reason, there will always be wastage) then you have less...

DIY Woody Grado/Symphones Magnums - A build diary

It's been a while since i listened to the purple set, but my first impression when i put the drivers in the browns was that they (the brown) were brighter (like the difference between flats and bowls brighter, but without doing an a/b i can't back that up).  I think i prefer the sound of the...

Grado pads – taped TTVJ flats: has anyone tried this before?

My personal preference at the moment is to take an old pair of bowls and cut the back off, then stick those onto a pair of flats.  That way you get the soundstage of bowls, with the bass of flats.  I suppose you could try taping them as well if you want a couple of subwoofers strapped to your...

Never noticed any glaring sibilance with mine.  What wood are they made from?

    First attempt At Grado Cups

Hmm,there was supposed to be paragraphs in that last post, oh well. One other thought, you might have an easier time of it with the rest closer to the wood, which you would be able to do with a longer chunk of wood in between the spindles, and also with a chuck.

    First attempt At Grado Cups

I'm no expert with wood (far from it in fact), so i'm open to being corrected. Also, i don't have a wood lathe, so i'm extrapolating experience from the metal hobby lathe i used for mine. If it's just random soft wood then i would imagine it might tear up, especially if it's got wet. I did a...

MAD HD SUPER II Best tubes and Phones

My advice would be to not spend a fortune to start with if you just want to experiment with different tubes, see if you can get some nos 5751 and go from there. I've tried a few JAN (joint army/navy) in mine, with my favourite being a Raytheon with black plates and a windmill getter...

    post your grado mods....

Don't know if this counts as a Grado mod as such, but i wanted to use my grados for voip/gaming, and needed a way to attach a microphone.  I didn't want it to be permanent, and i wanted to be able to fit it to any of my existing (or even future) cans.   I started with an old credit card, cut...

Well, the nice postman put 2 large jiffy bags through my letterbox today, one containing 3 metres of mogami 2893 and a neutrik plug (ordered a month ago but out of stock) and the other some assorted heatshrink (ordered yesterday lunch time from http://www.heatshrink-online.co.uk/ - highly...

Interesting, although i would hope that the outside of the can would have minimal impact on the sound, and at most the inside will get a coat or two of shellac...

DIY Woody Grado/Symphones Magnums - A build diary

Not sure that this really justifies an update, but i've been trying out a test finish on an off cut and am fairly happy with the results.  Went with dewaxed shellac in the end, although i don't want a supershiny finish so i'm using a satin laquer.       Depending on the angle and...

Quote:   I remember seeing those when you posted before, they look really nice.  Not sure if i want mine to go as dark as that though, after spending some time with them i almost want an 'invisible' finish, kinda like them just as they are tbh.

    post your grado mods....

Quote:   If you're having comfort problems with the jumbo bowls (which are often regarded as the most comfortable grado pads) then i would look at the headband, maybe add extra padding (put a chunk of foal on the underside to see if it helps) and/or gently benf it outwards to reduce...
