So, I hear you on the objective analysis.   Here is a RTA spectrum analysis the RCA 12av7 (color) and the "Blackplate" 12au7 (black)     They appear to be identical - not sure if the results are accurate though.  Will have to play around more later.

Well looking at the tech specs and tube pinout schematics the 6SJ7 seems to be identical to the 6j8p. Can anyone confirm this for me? And the 6SJ7 tubes seem rather common. However they're all metal cased. Is this harmful in audio reproduction?
