Stax 303 fork or cup holder repair
After a decade of listening, the 303 has cracked at the fork. At the high torque point, the corner. Stax has an equally food-like name for them: cup holders. Granted, Stax is priced high end, but the replacement parts just seem a bit on the high side for me, particularly for a piece of...- wildmonkeysects

Why is it that even digitized vinyl sounds so good?
What's a euphoric coloration? Is that a visual metaphor taken too literally? Y'know, unless I blinked and missed a reply along this line: Tape deterioration is another variable. Except for maybe 457 masters, many analog tape formulations have a nasty habit of slow partial self...- wildmonkeysects

STAX Lambda Pro usage questions...
Ok, so I almost worked up the, er, nerve, to take the 404s apart to find the elusive hair/dust...and they are now silent, so I will enjoy them unaltered. I suspect this is one of those "tradeoffs" that are part of the "performance" toy experience...ya get a sports car, ya don't get an auto...- wildmonkeysects

STAX Lambda Pro usage questions...
How does one remove the ear pads of the Stax 303/404 to have a close look inside---do they velcro off ala Sennheiser 600s? I would prefer that ripping sound to be velcro rather than glue! I'm guessing that there is a small piece of dust/hair, as they lived in a very, well, hairy, environ with...- wildmonkeysects

Best way to burn CD's
The Yamaha F1 internal CDR with included Nero 5.5 for burning and Neromix for ripping has been flawless for me, running w2k. Has a QR mode for lower intrinsic jitter/noise, good only for less than 60 minute or so CDs. For "data" blank CDRs I prefer TDK, for "audio" blank CDRs, I prefer JVC...- wildmonkeysects

STAX Lambda Pro usage questions...
Hey, I have a set of 404s that also does the squeak (kinda sounds like a funny little alien drawing a bow across a string?) right channel only. Narrowed it down to the 404s themselves, by swapping 303s and them between 313 and 006t driver amps, ie the 404 squeaks with either driver amp, and...- wildmonkeysects

ISO verrrrry comfy dynamic HPs with deep bass
Hey all: Out of lurk here...looking for impressions on dynamic HPs that are comfortable for couching to video, and lying down to tunes. Ultimate fi is less relevant here (I have Staxes for that), but need deeeep bass and minimum physical fatigue. Senn 600s are a bit too vice like, even with...- wildmonkeysects

Ultra-Quiet Computer
Have the Shuttle 51 mini case/mobo/supply with a quasi heatpipe, which was relatively quiet, minimal whine, just a little vibration...not as whisper quiet as claimed, but PFG...all was well till I added a Matrox Parhelia triple head video card which has the usual irritating whiiiiine fan... -
Soundquality of MD
Just a bit (puntime) of the mojo is missing. Not good for dance/tribal music. Ok for space/trance music. Great for spoken voice. In general, when the bitrate is sufficient to preclude obvious high frequency artifacts, what I have felt/heard with lossy coding schemes is less of a sense of...- wildmonkeysects

What keeps me from voting for the w1000 is the stupid IMHO "script" font saying "Soverign" on them. So, the Stax Omega2 it is.- wildmonkeysects

The Best computer card for headphones
By directly from, do you mean the music source being the PC/MAC, or do you mean headphones plugged into the computer? There is the somewhat overboard soultion: toslink SPDIF out from the PC => Genesis Digital Lens => outboard DAC => headphones. It is not a trivial engineering exercise to...- wildmonkeysects

diy speakers
I would suggest keeping it simple for starters: a two way system with good drivers. There is a basic version of the Ariel with a single part crossover...one cap for the tweeter, and that's it, which can be upgraded as desired. Also look into series crossovers...a bit tweakier, but with...- wildmonkeysects

I'm shocked, it really does make a difference (cables).
In a brief moment of seriousness, lemme tell you about solar. I am one of about 2 audiophile households on solar, as in PV cells feeding an inverter, and hoo boy, a power conditioner is not optional. The highish source "impedance" stairstep waveform that is put out by the Trace inverter is... -

Why do people dislike the HD600?
That's why. No, really, not specifically for the HD600s, but generally for the flavor, or dis-flavor of the month club, remember that our ear/brains have quite a bit of the acoustic equivalent of visual afterimage...the built in adaptive logic is looking for relative differences to the input...- wildmonkeysects

high quality resistors
Dale RN-60 metal films, commonly surplus, are not bad for cheap. But, I do second the motion as to Vishay S102 bulk foils...they can make either a subtle or significant difference in sonics, usually for the better. Wish it weren't so, but, you had to be there... Electrostatics vs Dynamics
I agree: implementation being the key concept. Although I am of the genotype with a preference for electrostatics, I would have to vote undecided...have not heard the W1000, F-1, et al yet. Nor the Grace... In a gross oversimplification, when I want magic and involvement, it's planar time...- wildmonkeysects

Yes. Good feeling when that happens. In my experience, at almost any price/performance level, matching and synergy is very important. opamp designs vs. discrete designs
Hey Kelly, long winded rant here, the short answer is having the input stage thermally isolated from the rest of the circuit is probably a big factor. It only self modulates in a discrete topology, whereas in/on a monolithic substrate, a whole symphony of isothermal fronts "slosh" around the...- wildmonkeysects

difference between SR-303 AND SR-404
I thought you were a person of few words, but your english is waaaay better than my Chinese... Planar in this context generally refers to any type of driver which moved (hopefully) uniformly over it's entire surface, as opposed to "pushed" at one area of it's surface by a voice coil...- wildmonkeysects
