Hmm. I can find the IE8 from a an authorized reseller in canada for $330 canadian. its out of province for me so its only 5% taxes too.... edit: thats only $30 more than the IE7. weird.

I've been using Denon C700s for a year or so and really like them. I've had to repair the plug 3 times and the driver housing once on each side. They still work fine but are starting to look a bit rough. I'm starting to look for replacements for them and would like some suggestions. Some points...

$50 - PX100 were my gateway drug. I'm sure many people started as low as $20 with the KSC75.

What's wrong with plastic? AFAIK the HD650 and K701 are mostly plastic as well and they don't sound too shabby. If you really want to get picky the drivers of the 325i are still housed in plastic and only the back of the cups are metal.

This thread describes the MS Pro as a less aggressive and airier sounding RS-1. But, I haven't heard either enough to say anything besides that. edit: This is insane that you'd have to go as high as RS1/MSPro to get similar satisfaction as the PK1s... maybe you could just settle on the yuins?

Nice weather in downtown Toronto has produced a few interesting sightings: AKG K171 and K271 (!!! hard to miss... awesome), some Grados, Shure E500 (or e530...) and my own MS-1s.

There's plenty of info on the internets about these phones. I find bowls comfy enough for an hour tops but comfy pads and HD-414 pads I can wear for several hours - they are comfortable enough, especially if you aren't afraid to bend the headband to fit your noggin. The MS-1s do not have bowls...

414 pads are easily dyed black with any fabric dye - just use really hot water 1L at most, ample amounts of dye (1/2 a pack should do) and squish them around periodically to make sure they're saturated. Then rinse really, really well with cold water and let them dry. I got my pads from some ebay...

what about ebay.co.uk? There's a set of C551s in the UK (no border fees or VAT?) here. The total price is still a bit high at close to $100 USD, but that's a lot better than $140. edit: This is still only one option - there's probably other phones out there that would work.

Denon C551 fits that bill rather nicely. Haven't heard them myself, but I have the C700s and they're very, very good. The C700s would be my first recommendation but you wanted small and discreet.
