I just got a pair of these. I powered these out of a chromecast feed to my speaker amplifier (Denon v477).     And I have to say in general I'm disappointed. Not because of these headphones per se, but because I think I'm expecting more out of a headphone than what they may be able to deliver...

  Like, UE900 is a great headphone sonically and aestethically, but I had a pair of cheap Shures that went through hell and back with no problems and this thing split into two when I tried to remove the cable once.

HELP! When trying to separate the ear piece and the cord the whole shell BROKE and the wire connecting the drivers and the connection SPLIT.    What do I do? Is this fixable under the warranty?

So the last premium headphone I owned was a pair of shure se235. I've been subsisting on a 10 dollar pair of koss ever since I lost those in a cab. Just got a pair of these. How do these compare sound signature wise to that Shure?   Edit:se215

So I lost my SE215s in a taxi cab and I bought the Brainwavz R1 as a replacement. They are kinda nice, but the bass is just way too overpowering and it's not clear enough, especially in the mids. So I need a suggestion for an upgrade to the SE215 - bonus points if it's a dual driver and on sale...

I've seen several E12s go for as low as 100 in the Selling forums. I sold mine for 105.

It's Revision 2, which isn't the defective version. I tried to like it, but it was clear the pairing didn't work when I liked the sound better both straight out of the DAC and then even straight out of my laptop. 

I didn't share that positive experience. The E12 made my HE-400s sound brighter than they already are (to the point of fatigue) and didn't do much to improve the sound quality beyond increasing the volume. I eventually sold it in order to pursue a desktop amplifier. 

Whoa hold on I never said the D2000s were better. But they manage to sound more refined than the HE-400s, that I can say.    Also I have previewed the LCD-2, albeit not for an extended period of time. I can't really speak much about the musicality of it, but the treble rolloff is a welcome...

You guys certainly do sound like HE-400 apologists, especially when claims that the HE-400 is as good as the LCD-2 are thrown around.    I'm convinced the HE-400 is a good, but flawed headphone. Vocals disappear behind the drums, hi-hats, and instruments when they clearly shouldn't...

So what should constitute most of the volume? The gain? My laptop volume? Or the amp volume? Which one should I use the most?

I will second this post ^^. I had a Fiio E17 and I just got the Fiio E12. 3-4x more power, and somewhat close the Magni. I can barely tell a difference. Any difference is marginal honestly. Only thing that really changed was the volume. The HE-400 is still the HE-400.   So the best sound...

Any HE-500 selling for that low of a price has to have something seriously wrong with it. Too good to be true IMO

It doesn't really need to cost all that much. For a lot of people end-game can be achieved at $1000 or $1500 at most (provided you know how to shop, i.e. second-hand).
