With all due respect to markl, I have found out that EarMax (regular version) works like a small gem in my bedroom. I am not sure how loud the others listen to music but for me the volume is more than enough and I haven't heard any notorious distortion at my listening level. Just my $0.02. Jibra

You definitely need to close your CDR. The other thing you can try is to use Nero and burn it as mp3 CD. Nero will check you mp3 files and detect some problems. This will be mostly true if you are burning CD with mp3 files from the net. (I am not saying that I am doing this. ) Jibra

I owned grado 60 and still have Senn 497. IMO, you can just take the path of Grado. Senn 497 is not good for portable unit for the first. It really requires a power for decent sound. I am also a bit doubtful for Senn 497 with your type of music even with an amp. Have you tried any Grado...

If you can find Parasound CDP-1000, go for it. I believe the transport section was made by Japanese company called CEC which is pretty much serious in this business. I am not sure whether Parasound tweaked the DAC section in this CDP. But it competes well with above 500 machines like SONY...
