Portable Amp / DAC Shootout: iFi Micro iDSD vs Resonessence Concero HP vs Chord Mojo vs iFi iDAC2 vs HRT Microstreamer

Nice review Sil3nce! If you've heard any Fiio players, could you do a quick compare for context? Interested in the Mojo and Concero HP vs Fiio X3ii specifically.

Nuforce HA-200: High performance, Single Ended, Class-A Headphone Amplifier

I use the Nuforce with my Fostex TH600. Works great, though there is a tiny bit of noise I cant hear with the harder to drive HE-400i. Though it drives the 400i perfectly well. The only headphone I have that the nuforce cant power is the AKG k340.

    Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones

The bag is really only good for dust protection at home. Useless for travel. I think I lost mine because I never had any use for it--I just use a Slappa hardcase.

    New Audio-gd DAC-19 [10th Anniversary Edition]

The DAC 19 doesnt get hot. Barely gets warm. I stack a really hot amp on top of mine. Shouldn't be a problem.

    Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones

I've heard the TH900 at meets. My basic impression is that it sounded more refined but I'm not really tempted for the price. Not going to be any more specific than that considering meet conditions. I love my TH600. Its bass is just monstrous, though the rumble effect can take on a one-note...

    Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

You can get them for $399 by purchasing B-stock from Razordog Audio. B-stock are usually returns but I have hard time believing that his are--mine came in an unopened box with plastic shrink wrap still on the headphones, everything brand new.    Anyway, I haven't heard the X2 specifically but...

    Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones

You dont have problems with noise floor? I used to own an Ember but got rid of it because it was too noisy with low impedance headphones. But i agree that its a good amp otherwise.
  9. manbear

Is there a general rule about what makes a particular headphone " low impedance". And possibly tough to drive with a particular amp?

Dynamic drivers always have an impedance spike corresponding to the resonant frequency of the voice coil/diaphragm system. Planars, on the other hand, always have ruler flat impedance (I couldn't tell you why, but it's easy to verify through graphs on headroom or innerfidelity).  The output...

    Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones

I think the nuforce ha-200 pairs really well. The subbass is off the charts, it adds a little warmth to the mids, and the highs are relaxed.

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions

It definitely has a deep, focused soundstage with excellent layering and separation. Small soundstage, yes, but very different from no soundstage.

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions

Everyone hears things differently, so dont let me influence you too much. I think the PM-3 sound is also tough to categorize. Its best to hear them yourself. Oppo's tour program might still be going on too.

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions

Yeah, i think the PM-3s soundstage clearly improves with better recordings. I wouldnt say the shoutiness is limited to poor recordings though. More like a particular frequency range, especially in complex passages. They have a good amount of xepth, but i still thought they could get congested...

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions

Hmm, thats a tough one. The PM-3 has a unique presentation thats a nice change from the P7, but I wouldnt want it to be my only headphone. Mostly because I found it a touch fatiguing. On some tracks or when Im in a certain mood, the PM-3 can sound shouty and claustrophic. Of course, YMMV. Those...

Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions

I can briefly compare the PM-3 to the P7 if that helps. The PM-3 is much more forward in the mids, more aggressive, intimate soundstage. The P7 has more rumble and thicker bass, the PM-3 has cleaner, tighter bass with about the same extension. The PM-3s treble is a bit more forward and less...

    NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S

The ESP-950 can also be had new for $600 on Amazon at times (usually the Christmas season).    If you're considering the 400s, HD600/650, and X2, the ESP-950 may or not be up your alley. It's very smooth and clean sounding and probably has more detail than any of those 4. It also has very nice...

    NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S

Buzzing is most likely caused by a hair or other fiber glued to the diaphragm, which is a well known QC issue for Hifiman. Interesting thing about that extra hole is that it matches the correction location of the bottom hole on the left side. Almost as if they only manufacture the left side...

    NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S

It really depends on the headphone. I boost up the bass on HE-400i via EQ and it is maybe 90% as good as the HE-400's bass. But the HE-400i is always going to have a certain character and texture to the bass that's different from the HE-400. Same story to a greater or lesser extent for any two...

Sennheiser HD600 vs HIFIMAN HE400i : what is the most relaxed ??

The HD650 is more relaxed than the HD600. Both the 600 and 650 are more relaxed than the HE-400i too, but it's not a huge difference.

ZMF Ori (Omni) - Upcoming Semi Open Flagship

I own the TH600 and listened to the Omni prototypes. They were just prototypes so YMMV... The Omni and TH600 are tuned very differently. Relative to the mids, the TH600 has more subbass quantity than the Omni because it has a dip in mids. That dip also gives it a very rumbly, subwoofery...

    NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S

Lets hope Hifiman is listening. All we want is the old HE-400 with smoother treble... It's pretty simple. I like my HE-400i but I'm not really interested in buying another Hifiman just to get a slight variation of the same signature. Seems like 400s, 400i, and 560 are all more similar than...

    Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

I dont game but i really like the 400i for movies. Dialogue is clear and forward, explosions are forceful without being excessive, and they take just enough edge off gunshots and effects to lose the harshness but not the energy. Music and surround effects are nicely layered and directional as...

    Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

The Vali has more than enough power. It may just have a softer bass presentation than what you're looking for. I'd try EQing up the bass a bit and if that doesn't work, try a solid state amp.

    Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones

IMO the leakage claims are over stated. I use them at work every day; with typical office background noise, they are completely silent from a few feet away. In a place with no background noise like a library, bedroom, etc., then yes, there is a little leakage, on par with Apple earbuds maybe...
