Upgrade or just EQ?
Of course different transducers, electrical and acoustic tuning, will result in different amounts of distortions which, while usually not disturbing because they tend to be much quieter than music, do remain audible. So EQing one IEM into the other one will always have some remaining level of...- castleofargh

The Doppler Illusion, why is it so hard to understand?
The Doppler effect is strictly the objective phenomenon. Wavelength shifting due to relative motion. There is no mystery, not unmeasured part and no need for a human at all. The paper that Red quoted is not about the Doppler effect itself, but about a strange way we might perceive the pitch...- castleofargh

Anyone into crossfeed?
You're the one bringing up a fidelity concern about an OS(not even one version of it, the all OS), isn't it normal to want to clearly know if it's a real matter that concerns maybe billions, or yet another audiophile anecdote of dysfunctional testing method turned into a global statement for no...- castleofargh

Dali's Soft Magnetic Composite Driver
You're mistaken about ultrasounds for sound localization. I have a few reason to be confident here: 1/ the audio industry has been grasping at straws to validate any impact from hires. And the results are pretty much 3 papers, one debunked for bad testing conditions, one with tiny statistical...- castleofargh

The Doppler Illusion, why is it so hard to understand?
Some car passes by(let's say straight line and constant speed). As it approaches the guy on the side of the road, the frequencies measured at the guy's ear are stable until they start going down(to reach the same frequencies as the ones actually emitted by the car while passing the guy, and then...- castleofargh

Reference playback
@Audiophiliac do you think nobody here understands the idea that if a curve is drawn with dots, then more dots help make something closer to a real curve? Literally everybody understands that if the aim is to draw that curve on a paper by hand. And probably everybody did think about digital...- castleofargh

The last thread was locked because of the insults(most of which got deleted) coming on top of the admittedly very strange thread. OP, people don't struggle with the complexity of your ideas, they struggle with how you write your sentences. I have a better understanding of special and general...- castleofargh

Dali's Soft Magnetic Composite Driver
There cannot be a clear and precise answer so long as we cannot exclude your brain tricking you as the cause of your feelings. You asked if it is the only possibility, and it isn’t, but it’s one of them and thinking you really hear a change when fully aware of the codec setting, sadly that does...- castleofargh

The Doppler Illusion, why is it so hard to understand?
The frequency is higher at the listener's position than what the source is emitting because of the movement, but it does not go up as the source moves toward the listener. And yet, many people under some conditions(depends on the sound and loudness and what not) feel like the pitch in indeed...- castleofargh

Dali's Soft Magnetic Composite Driver
Anything that can play a frequency above 48kHz is allowed to call itself hi-res. Fidelity or bit depth aren't involved. At least that's what Sony's golden logo means. Some people have better standards, but it's up to them. There is no obligation to do better. In the music industry, some got...- castleofargh

Different perceptions on different days?
I haven’t seen a paper talking about this in general, would love a link if there is one. There is ample research on hearing loss, tinnitus and various diseases, ear infections, possible side effect of drugs... it is often suggested that some event or product could have some impact, alleviate...- castleofargh

「Official」Asian Anime, Manga, and Music Lounge
Highspeed Étoile => Haisupîdo Etowâru "Look mom I did a translating!" I didn't watch much this year, usually 1 episode, just to check if I thought it was worth being turned into anime, and then having no desire to check episode 2. If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...
AFAIK, no to the internal reflection idea. Reverb's delays at that scale is not something we're going to care about when imagining distances or spaciousness. If we did, would we then imagine being in a room the size of our ear canal? Not spacious indeed ^_^. On the other hand, a deeper...- castleofargh

Mods delete please
The way you describe it, and talk about being fast enough to take the in ear off your ears, I conclude that the noise isn't just for a fraction of a second, but lasts some time. Is that correct? If you're going to do more tests, I suggest using the least sensitive IEM or, even better, a...- castleofargh

To crossfeed or not to crossfeed? That is the question...
It works, but I also got a warning that something wasn't allowed in part of the VST host. Given that I never got that message, it does point toward the just added Anaglyph. The guys who made it are legit, the website's address is the right one. Beyond that, IDK.- castleofargh

[ LONG POST ] So I went to ANOTHER headphone store.... -- A Final Round of testing has allowed me to better understand the differences with higher-quality headphones.. but I'm still stumped. Posting my experience and thoughts for others in the same boat.
In research, localization and lateralization are used that way for a reason. On this forum, you might feel like a weird outlier, but IRL you're not. It's probably because those with terrible headphone imaging experience may not get all that passionate about the headphone hobby in the first...- castleofargh

Fascinating talk at CanJam this year
Sorry, but it seems to be the same as always for his little interventions shown on videos. So long as he talks about electronic, digital signal, a little math, and objective variables, all is well and often interesting. The moment he starts declaring that this and that are audible(or not) while...- castleofargh

How do you measure sound stage?
I don't remember group delay being mentioned in books on sound localization. Or any small attempt to link them to personal preference or other subjective impressions, leading to a model that didn't defeat itself with several of the sampled measured. I see it brought up more for HRTF models and...- castleofargh

IEM tips, more than just fit?

How do you measure sound stage?
Yes, that's how I imagine it. By altering the signal in an audible way, it's likely to change how we interpret some of it. But it's also not something simple or consistent enough to correlate say a THD value with a particular imaging. That's why I said "Not something spatially meaningful for us...- castleofargh

How do you measure sound stage?
I basically agree with you. You can't really force much about spatial localization and general imaging with just headphones. A headphone swap can have a big impact, but it's hard to control and impossible to make it right, as different people need different FR for example, and also because it's...- castleofargh

Cognitive biases, we all have them because they are us.
Again, we might be right in the middle of biases. How you perceive moderation, and me, how I act. Based on me being a human and all, it's likely that I'm even more partial than I think I am. I'm willing to consider that. Then again, I'm somewhat pro method and pro data for audio and moderation...- castleofargh

Cognitive biases, we all have them because they are us.
My mother is never going to care about that ;), But yes being able to know we're judging sound when we think we are, is certainly valuable and sometimes important. Biases have also been a hot topic for musicians in competitions for a while. Some competitions did act on the findings about blind...- castleofargh
