Hello Head-Fi! Phiaton offers you free gear!

What is most important to me about headphones is getting lost in the music. I am an amateur musician and have heard many live (acoustic) performances. I want to hear the tiny nuances in the singer's voice, the squeak of fingers on strings, and be able to separate each instrument in the track...

    Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp

I bought a starving student amp a while back, and it does something a bit strange. Sometimes with a fairly low level input, I hear humming that grows in volume until it pops (sounds like an arc) and the humming goes away. It will also 'pop' when I tap the amp with my finger and the humming goes...

    KSC35 vs KSC75?

Well, I bought the ksc75 the other day at Circuit City for $20, and they sound pretty darn good. My only concern is bending them so they're angled right with some pressure. I don't want too much, because the bass is overpowering, but I want to be able to listen to them at rather low volumes and...

Shipping Damage : USPS : What are my options

Glad the situation is resolved. I recently mailed a pool cue's shaft back to the manufacturer... and the box got there, but it had been cut open, the contents removed, taped up, and shipped on. I had insured the package, but they needed a bunch of paperwork from both ends filled out. I lost...

How much sound do open headphones let out?

Even at moderate volume... my roommate couldn't hear what I was listening to with my HD650's last year. Perhaps I listen to music much softer than most, but I don't think so. I think the effect is overstated. If you're in a quiet office, that's one thing... but I worked in a computer lab, and...

    Worst accidental treatment of headphones?

I'm a bit embarrassed to say it,b ut the other night... I wasn't feeling well. My room was dark, and I'm not very familiar with it yet. Turns out, my HD650's fell off of my desk, and I stepped very hard on the right side. I felt them twist, jumped quickly off of it, and picked them up. They...

It's time to upgrade the computer

Spread spectrum is pretty safe to play with. It's purpose, if IIRC, is to reduce system noise from EMI. Give it a shot. I keep mine at 1%, but this is a little arbitrary. I've also noticed that some motherboards introduce more noise than others. My albatross KX18D ProII made a decent amount...

No sound coming from my Chaintech AV-710

You can't hook a CMOY, or any other amp without a DAC to the digital output of the card. Disable digital out, and you should be fine.

Could I use this along with my Audigy 2 ZS?

You could, but I'm not sure you would want to. The audigy's, although great for gaming, aren't that great for music. If you're recording and monitoring through the card, then routing the audio to the A2ZS would increase latency, and decrease sound quality... at least of the monitoring. You...

what PC player should I use?

Foobar2000, definately. ASIO isn't really that hard to get to work (at least with the cards I've used it with). Just make sure you have a guide to go by if there is one, or play around until it kicks in. I've had no issues with newer machines. However, on my gf's old celeron 566, trying to...

    6/26/05 Pittsburgh/HeadRoom Meet

I was very impressed with most of the gear I heard today. The balanced max sounded like... nothing I've ever heard. The HD650's sounded like they weren't there. I've heard of this happening, but have never experienced it myself. It was just... perfect. Everything from the bithead to the home...

Copy protection: ripped/burned CD vs. original CD

I bought a Maroon 5 CD that I believe has CP. My NEC DVD burner won't even read it. I've downloaded a few rips of it, and not only does it have CP, it sounds like the engineer was on crack. All of the defects you can hear in the rip are obvious on a normal CDP, too.
