In ear headphones for around $100?

Watch for the UE TF-10 sale on Black Friday. They typically do it every year, so they may do it this year as well.

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Do you guys think this additional laid back character with the dog pads will cause vocals to sound more distant or lost in the mix? I'd still like them to sound distinct and powerful, if that makes sense. Furthermore, I usually hear "laid back" when describing headphones that are a little...

The T50RP Paradox | reviews, discussion, & mini-tour impressions (index in second post)

Quote:   I never said they're boring if you're referring to comment's I've made. In fact, I think being bright makes them a little more lively, but I'd only be worried about fatigue. However, if they really are bright, people might be listening them at a lower volume (at least compared to...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

What are people's opinions regarding the Dog Pads vs the Shure pads? From what I can gather from previous posts, the comfort is better, bass slam is greater, and the mids are smoother with the Dog Pads. How about the treble? Does it get much darker with the Dog Pads because I enjoy the treble...

The T50RP Paradox | reviews, discussion, & mini-tour impressions (index in second post)

The frequency response for the Paradox seems dead flat even beyond 1k Hz, but isn't this bad for a headphone (especially for the purpose of enjoying music)? I've always heard that you'd like to see a moderate linear decrease in response after 1k due to the proximity of headphones to the ear...

Quote: This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but that's sort of how I feel about tubes too. I think DSP is an adequate substitute for more expensive tube amplifiers. Especially because the pleasure from using tubes comes from the pleasant (even harmonic or whatever) distortion...

sennheiser hd 598 sounds distorted after burn in

Quote:   The nocebo effect is a negative expectation can result in negative experience, even if there is no tangible/real effect occurring. In other words, with the nocebo effect, you would expect or worry so much about hearing distortion that you convince yourself distortion exists.

Street cred with hipsters and overears, $500?

Quote:   You can't test leakage like that because most of the sound that's leaking will be blocked by your head when you have them on. If you have some foams or something to cover the ear cups when you take them off, that's a better measure. Alternatively, you could use a free program...

    Budget closed cans, bass emphasis

I'll add that I own the XB500s and while they do have good bass response, they are too dark (or maybe they just have mediocre mids/highs). It makes it difficult to enjoy them with typically bass filled genres like electronic, dubstep, and hip hop. Maybe it'll be just the right level of darkness...

Using a custom IEM without an amp (JH audio)

Quote: Thanks for your reply. If I got these, I'd most likely run them out of my iPhone and an O2 if I was at my computer. While I'm sure an amp would be nice, it is just so much more convenient to not have an amp. Most of my travel would involve moving around and having to deal with an...

Using a custom IEM without an amp (JH audio)

Quote: Oh yeah, I meant I'm not sure which stores had demo versions to try, but that really doesn't make too much sense now that I think about it because those stores wouldn't be selling them anyway. It would make more sense for the audiologist to have the, so I'll just the JHA website...

Using a custom IEM without an amp (JH audio)

I am potentially interested in purchasing a JH audio custom IEM. I figure they fit my sound signature requirements the best since I'm looking for an improved UE TF10 (maybe less recessed midrange) with better fit. However, I won't be using them with an amp most of the time (let's say about...

Separate amp and dac vs combo amp/dac

I was thinking about purchasing the O2 and ODAC. I am debating between a separate O2 and ODAC or getting the one enclosure combo. The reason I would go separate is I can then use the O2 portably (or at least just move it around in my house), and I can't do that with the combo without moving...

Is the Sennheiser HD 558 mod worth it?

Quote: The pads are super easy to remove. You might be afraid that you're going to break them, but they're just clipped on and with a little force, they clip on/off. The part you should be careful is unscrewing the cover to access the tape. Try to be gentle with the wire attached to the...

Is the Sennheiser HD 558 mod worth it?

No, the 558 DOES have foam in them (I owned them). But your implication is right, removing the foam wouldn't make them 598s like removing the foam made 555's into 595's. There are still some differences (I own 598s now). Quote:

You're right! Those measurements are from November 2011 and it seems like this final design has only been out recently. We'll see what Mr. Speakers has to say, I guess. And that's certainly odd about the 840 pads...you'd think that they wouldn't be that delicate. Do all Shure SRH840 owners...

Quote: That's good. Do you find the bass to be an improvement as well? I'm not unhappy with the 598 bass, but I'd imagine these to definitely have better extension (especially from looking at the graphs).    Are these headphones being constantly revised? Should I wait a while before...
