Best mids over-the-ear open headphone for less than USD 300?
Not to be too insistent but I am listening to the 598's right now and the treble is LESS piercing than the D2000. I dont think anyone could describe them as having piercing treble (they ARE made by Senn!!) ... they are "bright" -ish because they have less mid-bass than the typical house-sound...- franklyshankly

Best mids over-the-ear open headphone for less than USD 300?
you pretty much described everything great about the HD598 ... I've had D2000 and M50, was looking for something with stronger mids. I've been completely impressed with the 598, especially with voices and soundstage (which I always conflate with separation) ... there is SO much space between...- franklyshankly

the soundstage on these is truly incredible, cannot be overstated ... anyone that loves mids and soundstage should try these. TBH I never really got the soundstage effect, even from the D2000 ... I can't take these off!!!- franklyshankly

I'm finding this to be so true! In a way I'm actually most surprised about the bass on these phones! From many of the reviews you'd think they had basically no bass! I find the bass perfect in relation to the mids, and while I'm not a bass head I am a bass lover, so yeah pretty happy about that...- franklyshankly

Music, I had the HD650 for a few weeks about a year ago and granted, I ran it off the same set-up I have now (Pure i-20 into Rotel receiver) I dont' remember being quite as wow-ed by it. Part of this is probably due to the fact that I'm not an audiophile in the strict sense of the word, I'm a...- franklyshankly

oooooooh yes! first eargasm to this song by Bill Fay. Never heard it sound so good, wow! the 598's just sing, really shows off the separation, the clarity, texture, and the way it never loses focus of the vocals ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAmpgK9C_iE- franklyshankly

just thought i'd add my feedback on these cans. i love them. they look way better in person, they seem a little fragile but well constructed at the same time. Sound is amazing for me, coming from bass heavy phones (S4, D2000, M50, etc) I was worried about lacking lower frequencies but these seem...- franklyshankly

So has anyone been able to compare rev.2 with rev.3.5? Now that I've satisfied myself regarding the bass and mids, I'm wondering if the latest "fix" means these are back to being somewhat "dark" (in the same way people described rev.2) ... I understand there is a upper treble peak, which seems...- franklyshankly

Ill be using a vintage sansui 3030 receiver for my amp and a Pure i20 for a dac. Neve owned a proper headamp (not true, owned the kicas for a minute, had issues with it compared to the receiver with 650s) ... The problem is ultimately I want something like the LCD for which I'd go all out on a...- franklyshankly

Okay that's actually helpful thank you! I'm just confused when you say the 400 has better detail and instrument separation but yet the 650 is less congested in the mids ... I always think of congestion to be antithetical to separation ... The 650 mids are more spacious and clearer than 400 but...- franklyshankly

I've read the comparisons and really appreciate your efforts on the thread .... Not sure why I have such trouble understanding the 400 sound sig. You say it's balanced so the mids aren't as pronounced as the 650 but they aren't exactly recessed? Are they still warm and dark with some trouble at...- franklyshankly

So I've read everything there is to read about these cans (quite the drama I have to say) and I'm more confused now than when I started reading. I'm trying to decide between these and the hd 650s. I've owned the 650s before so I know what to expect and honestly they are really great for me but I...- franklyshankly

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
I've been to BB twice now to try these out and I am really impressed. Average size head here (should probably measure, not sure exactly but def not huge head), but I find these to be extremely comfortable for 10 minutes LOL ... I loved them and I guess I'm lucky (huge headed?) bcuase they fit perfectly, so comfortable. I'm really interested in these phones but after reading the "New" thread on these that was closed, I'm wondering if there are enough users to support a new thread. Hifiman RE262 Initial Impressions
Would a desktop amp be overkill for these? I'm really into the description of the 262 but would mostly use them at my desk. I'd be looking at something like Asgard or KICAS or something like that. Would it be better to get a portable "balanced" amp (eg stepdance) or would I possibly get better...- franklyshankly

Moodyrn, I totally agree! I grew up with this sansui, always loved the look and feel and sound of it. This is definitely not about novelty for me, I can't afford anything else! And if the sound ends up impressing me (which I suspect it will), then all the better. I'm in no rush to spend money...- franklyshankly

Thanks for the feedback! I guess I'll just wait til I have everything and see how it sounds as is. I tend to like a warmer sound, so I'm not too worried about that (unless it starts to sound muffled).- franklyshankly

My apologies if this has been asked but I wasn't sure how to search for this question. My folks have a Sansui receiver they bought in Korea when they were stationed there during Korean war.
