I got some modelling clay myself today as well, hopefully I'll have some time tonight to make some adjustments and see what happens to the sound :)     I will be turning this, or my second set in to a full woody project in the new year.  Myself and my father will be working on CNC machines...

Alright... I so modded my T50 RP's just the basics for the first time today, added in some dampening, put on some new pads, and actually re-cabled to each driver directly with some beldin quad I had laying around here...   Honestly, I am incredibly impressed at this point, the highs and mids...

Another vote for AKG k701's.  Although I do generally like the sound of my friends HD650's better, I found my AKG's through a Little Dot MKII did a fantastic job for strings/pianos/opera/quartets.  If you can get a chance to listen before buying, definitely give 'em a chance.

Raindog hit a lot of it - keys to a good paint job is 90% prep work.  Make sure everything is cleaned really really thuroughly.  After that I would work on masking/taping anything at all you don't want paint on.  This is usually the most important part.  Either disassemble or just tape up...

If you have the money, one of the smaller Tube Little Dot amps is always a good choice!  Yet to be dissapointed by one.

Another vote for UHA-4 here, a friend picked one up and I got a chance to listen to his modded Grado SR60's and absolutely loved it.  Ill bring my K701's next time and give them a listen - but worth the money to me.
