I have the HD600, with a Marantz 2245 and a profire 2626/digi 002/digi 192.   I absolutely love it for music listening, but it needs/wants some power and varies drastically with different sources. I like to bring up the bass one notch with the EQ on the marantz sometimes but thats about it...

My old HD595's (120 ohm) benefited tremendously from a Marantz 2245. Not so much in volume, but in timbre. Don't know about the new 50 ohm version though.   I also have a Denon AVR-1909 for 5.1 and the headphone out is pretty bad. I wouldn't ever consider it an option.

I will if I have to. I live in an apartment in a building built in the 1800's. Hardwood floors, 15 foot ceilings - they are giant resonators. I have an arrangement with the girl below in which she lets me know when shes gone. There is nothing like busting the 5.1 for a well mixed movie.  ...

The 600's are not listenable from an iPhone 4 unamped. Maybe in the quietest of quiet settings they would be OK. I own both and have tried. A small tease, at best. Get an amp for the 600's or get the Denon's.

Its this simple: If you are running straight from an iPod and you have the volume at almost max, its going to distort. No ifs and or buts about it. The amp in the ipod just doesn't cut it.   If you had an amp, and had the volume on the ipod all the way up, it would still be distorted.  ...

I use the headphone jack in my Marantz 2245 my dad gave me from his college days (70's). Beats the hell out of any entry level headphone amp I've tried. As far as other receivers, I liked it better than Denon's mid-level receivers, costing $2k+, albiet a more colored sound.

I've used the HD595 for 5 years now, but I literally JUST got a pair of HD600's delivered from FedEx :)   It should be a pretty damn big difference. If its not, I'm going to be very, very upset. I'll do an A/B for ya after a proper burn-in.

Source is an old as crap Audigy 2 Zs Platinum Pro, which I've never liked. I think you're right about the DAC. I didn't even know what a DAC was until today. I only began to research when i broke my HD595's.
