They just have a particular sound and need a tight seal.  I just bought a pair a month ago and hated how they sounded.  It's been in the box since.  If anyone is interested, let me know - not my sound at all.

I was actually in the same situation as yourself and I went with the SM3s.  After hours and hours, if not days upon days of research I found the SM3 to be my best bet.  Now to look for a amp/DAC for it...

Yeah, that's why I've been considering the Golds; I'm still pretty stuck between them and the IE8s.  I've been also looking at the SM3s too, might be willing to shell the cash out for 'em.
