Uber noob question   Can I hook up my studio monitors to the pre-amp on the lyr and control the volume on the lyr?

Please excuse my ignorance, I'm new to tubes and I'm trying to learn a little more about them.   What is a grey shield? Is it the grey little boxes within the tube? Looks like all the tubes that the Lyr takes have grey shields.

Do I need to upgrade to a DAC?   My setup: - HiFiMAN HE-500 - Schiit Lyr - Asus Xonar DGX   I have my eyes on a Schiit Bifrost but I have serious doubts that it will improve the sound like my amp did, although the improvement was small.

Question...   In regards to the usb->dac->active monitors, I understand you'll need optical cables inorder for this to work. In my case, I'll be using KRK rp6 which don't have optical in but rca,trs, and xrs.   Heres the kicker, what if I were to use a dolby digital to analog converter...
