    CIEMs as Earplugs?

The custom ear plugs (no sound/speakers) I use under my helmet while motorcycling are essentially the silicone ear impressions that are made as the precursor for molding custom IEMs. Once the silicone is trimmed, they are relatively easy to insert/remove. I don't know the level of db reduction...

    Earbuds

I will second the Yuin recommendation:  either the PK3 or the slightly more expensive PK2. In my opinion, and those to whom I've loaned them for a trial, these earbuds have remarkably good sound for the price. I use the PK3s (with the foam "doughnut") during walks/runs and have no issues with...

Dont like IEMs. Any 'earbuds' out there in the $25-30 range ?

Quote: Another vote for the Yuin earbuds. I have the a set of the Apple EarPods and while they are comfortable, the sound quality (to me), is *not* up to the marketing hype. On the other hand, the "plain Jane" Yuin PK3 buds, for about the same money, offer much better SQ from an unamped...

Best custom iem for Classical music?

I have a pair of the JH5 Pros and agree that they offer terrific value and excellent sound for the dinero.   YMMV.

Etymotic MC5/MC3 - just how bad are they?

I have given SWMBO an Ety HF set AND an MC set for use with her iPhone 4. (She tends to be VERY tough on all things electronic and optical...) She likes the slightly larger size and perceived durability of the MCs; however, she has noted that the sound of the HF set is FAR better. (FWIW, she...

Custom tips for Ety HF-5s or not ?

While I don't have any particular comfort issues with triple flanges, I do have a set of the custom tips on my Ety HF2s...have worn them comfortably on numerous 12+ hour international flights and only take them out when eating. (And yes, the custom tips will also fit the ER4-P.)   For added...

I got some Used ETY hf5's...

FWIW, when shipped, Ety provides two sizes of the triple flanges for different size ear canals. My wife uses the smaller flanges on her HF3s with good success while I use the larger size on my ER4-Ps. (I've also experimented with the Comply foam tips, but none of the three sizes provided the...

We have a breakthrough at Best Buy!

I visited the Dallas Best Buy listening station a couple of weeks ago. They had 4 - 6 headphones nicely displayed; however, during my visit, there was no player/amp attached to any of them. When I finally got the attention of the nice, but clueless sales person, he initially tried to demo the...

    Earbud buyer's guide, feat. TM5, OK1, PK1, ATH-CM700, OK2, K319, OK3, PK3, PK2

I've been using the PK1 (amped with a Super Mini Moy) for about 3 years and the PK3 (unamped) for two years. I've been VERY happy with both 'buds and totally agree with the original reviewers comments that they sound great and are amazing bargains. In fact, I've helped "sell" a few sets of PK3s...

Etymotic Er-4 Custom Tips: Which ones?

Another vote for ACS tips purchased via Ety...super comfortable, excellent seal and no change in the SQ (for me). YMMV

Spider Gives Away 20pcs "TinyEar" Micro Driver IEM

I would love to get a set of these to use underneath my motorcycle helmet...so far, I haven't found anything that is small enough to stay put under the helmet AND block the ambient noise around me.

Can't get a seal with the HF2 (but I can with the ER6i and ER-4)

Interesting issue...I find that the ER4Ps and HF2s  with the triple flanges fit/seal exactly the same for me. Perhaps you could try switching the ER4P flanges to the HF2s and see if it makes a difference??   FWIW, I recently upgraded to the ACS custom tips on my HF2s and am a VERY happy...

ACS Custom molding in NYC and little known facts about ACS with Etymotic

Just a personal thumbs up for the ACS tips. I received mine about a week ago (process took about 3 weeks total) and I am extremely pleased with the result. I normally use the silicone triple flanges and had no major issues; however, for my ear canals, the isolation and comfort of the ACS tips is...

    Replacements for ER6i helmet use?

I wear a fairly snug fitting Arai and even with deep insertion, the HF2s stick out too far to be usable with my helmet. One of my riding buddies uses the tiny, dual driver "S Plug" http://www.bikebone.com/page/BBSC/PROD/motorcycle-headsets/S22SP however, I haven't listened to them and have no...

Another vote for the Yuin PK3s...very decent sound (IMHO) for their price point and definitely no amp required.

    IEM Recommendations: Motorcycling!

I have the Etymotic ER4Ps and they are my favorite IEM (at least while I save for some JH11s...). That said, they *do* stick out of the ear far enough that they would interfere with putting on/taking off a properly fitted, full face helmet.   As for listening/awareness of one's surroundings...

    IEM Recommendations: Motorcycling!

Some of the folks I ride with use the Etymotic ER6i plugs...very good noise isolation (usually with triple flanges) and decent sound (price considering...). Another universal fit (but considerably more expensive...) option is the dual driver S plugs (...

What Advantages Do Earbuds Hold Over IEMs?

I have both Yuin earbuds (PK1) and Etymotics IEM (hf2). I use the Yuins when I don't want/need total isolation OR when I want to be able to remove them quickly/easily (e.g., quick auto trips in town). I use the Etys at times when I want high isolation (e.g., long airplane flights or working out...

    IEM for Iphone

I use the Etymotic hf2s with my iPhone 3GS and have been VERY happy with both sound and voice quality. (Disclaimer: I am a major ER4P fanboy...) The good news that they are also currently on sale at the Ety site:  http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/hf2.html   Note that the control button on the...

    Details!

I can't comment on the range of all IEMs available; however, based on glowing reports, I recently purchased the RE-0. To *my* ears, the RE-0s were VERY disappointing...the bass and mids sounded "bloated" relative to the high end and they definitely did not have the micro detail of the Etymotics...

    Headphones with most ribbon-like sound?

I've got some Maggie 2.6Rs and the only thing I've found that's close to their revealing, awesome "tweeter ribbon-ness" is my Etymotic ER4Ps. Sorry to say, but unless you find them used, you will probably need to spend double your preferred budget.

What are the fiver most important musical experiences of your life?

Hmmm...interesting question: (1) First time I heard Brahms Lullaby on a music box. I was about 3 - 4, but I remember hiding under the bed in "shame" because the music made me smile and cry at the same time! (And we KNOW, big boys don't cry... ) (2) Virgil Fox playing "Toccata and Fugue in...

hitting the road, single set all-purpose phones (best bang for buck ca. $200)

Are you open to an IEM solution? When I travel for business, I use Etymotic ER4Ps, a Shellbrook Mini Moy amp and an old 80 GB iPod. It's a super compact set-up, the SQ is great (IMHO), the isolation is awesome and I have a good portion of my sonic library at hand, whereever I find myself.
