The 2013 solar flare thread - nope, this is not the 2012 hype

I am installing a faraday cage around my house. Whole house lightning arrestor, too.   I'm gonna' be ready!

Gonna build a CMOY.. what are the benefits of using one?

I use one of those kitchen scotchbrite / sponge pads with water....to clean my iron tip. That and some RatShack flux has brought the tip back from the brink..... As for my soldering skills..... MY EYES ARE SHOT.   period. Before I get too much further into this, I'm getting a...

    CMOY

Maybe it didn't do it right, but this is my first effort.  I already had the 10k resistor in. So, I changed R3 to 2.2k......=gain 5.5      Not best choice, but this'll work for now.   1st try at this amp.     If I were doing this again, I'd use the 4.7k in R4. The Tangent site says...

Dad shot dead in front of his family... Craigslist deal

Balderon, Depends on what you mean by 'effective'. At English hangings for pickpockets, the #1 problem was pickpockets.     A People that lacks self control will end up living in slavery.

Gonna build a CMOY.. what are the benefits of using one?

Tamu, couple of Questions. What opamp in your virtual ground circuit? If I connect this to the CMOY, do C3/4 replace the PS caps in that circuit?   I have a pair of 470ufd there now.   What voltage can I feed this?  I have an isolated 24vdc wall wart.  Would that work?   Also,  How do...

Using speaker output's to drive headphones.... and what awesome results!!

Common ground.....the R- and L- go to the same place, typically.     This is why I warned about making CERTAIN you have a common ground amplifier.   If you don't the above wiring will be career limiting for the amp.....ZAP.

Gonna build a CMOY.. what are the benefits of using one?

At my RadioShackup, I noted 2 main things:   1.  Nobody knows nuttin'.   Well, maybe there name and the way to work.   2.  Protoboard at my ratshack was in 2 different places.  I didn't see the 2nd location which had the EXACT board called out      in the plans, so I bought something...

Gonna build a CMOY.. what are the benefits of using one?

Radio Shackup has a 3-pack of connector wire which will last for years at the CMOY build level. 1 each of red/black/green      Tins like a champ so it is easy to work with.

Using speaker output's to drive headphones.... and what awesome results!!

I'd be REAL careful trying this. Headphones are 3-wire.....Lhot / Rhot and ground.   If your amp is NOT common ground you could fry something....and I know some folk got a fortune into good ear speakers.   I would also avoid 'd' amps.  I am told there is a small amount of DC always on the...

Cambridge Audio 840C and Dac Magic

Sorry, guy.  I'm a MAC user and have given up the chase for sound / video cards, drivers and 'tricks' to get stuff to work.  I built several computers over the years and am one of the go-to guys for low-level fixes in my neighborhood.   Heck, I even had problems with my printer not producing...

Gonna build a CMOY.. what are the benefits of using one?

I've got a 1/2 built CMOY out on the kitchen table!  Using mainly RatShack parts, but am waiting for a local guy to get in some OPA2134s.   I like to buy local when possible.  I will also pick up some 'better' caps at that time.  I have a PS (wallwart) from a joystick which I can regulate down...

Cambridge Audio 840C and Dac Magic

I haven't fired up the AE and looked at the panel on the CA yet. The update was (apparently) to fix the issue with the AE.  The AE has poor clock regulation or some such and the CA will not 'lock' (right word?) to the signal and will make an awful sort-of screech periodically. To do the...

Cambridge Audio 840C and Dac Magic

22khz sampling frequency will probably produce sound better than an AM radio,  but certainly not 'high fidelity' or even as good as FM. If I were doing documentary or simple radio work, such a low sampling rate would be fine.   Now, my 840c....and Yes, I do actually own one!  says 22 or 24...

    Airport Express BUZZZZZZZZZZZ

I have the same setup.....CA840c fed from an AE. Same, nutty problem, too.   Cambridge has sent me the (zipped) update, all the files and a set of OK PDF instructions. YOU WILL NEED  1.  Computer running XP (sp3, I hope) 2.  Serial Port 3.  Null Modem cable.  This is the tricky one...

    Measurements

First, I have been involved with the loud side of hi-fi for a long time....well over 30 years. My last headphones were Koss Pro4aa of the original issue. I continue to own a pretty good system which remains static for years at a time since I simply can't afford new stuff all the time. I am...

    Building a Headphone Measurement Lab

Good stuff: Now, from the perspective of someone who spent 30 years in metrology: Are you going to build a dummy load for amps? By this I mean NOT just a power resistor and a DVM with signal generator / oscillator. I mean a truly reactive load. I can find some schematics which the loudspeaker...
