I think this has more to do with your storage device, foobar and other programs that access your storage just failed because the storage itself has failed. Try to connect the HD directly and check the SMART value of your HD using app like Crystal Disk Info.

Can you try a ground lift? Basically running your computer and HS50M without ground connected to see if the noise is gone. If it is then it's a ground loop problem between the speaker and the computer, anyway to break the loop between the two devices should fix it.

Even if the A3X is smaller it is still a better deal than the KRK, IMO. You can't make the KRK sounds clearer or has the superior imaging of the A3X. For bass, this depends on personal taste and for me the A3X alone is enough, otherwise you can add a sub.

Not really, if he connects the HS50M to another device like laptop or DAP and they're ok there, then likely the grounding or the computer is the problem. In these latter cases solving it will take money and trial and errors.
