Back up speakers on extreme budget

So basically I'm looking for small, inexpensive speakers to use for when I don't want to use my DT 770's for whatever reason. My budget is around $30, and I know I won't get much quality for this but that's all I'm looking for. Will be used for a mix of movies, music, and games. Anyone have any...

The Xonar Essence STX Q/A, tweaking, impressions thread

Hey guys, I'm wondering how the STX driver settings interact with windows settings, and what the best settings were overall in terms of audio quality. I listen to mainly v0 mp3's, so I have the driver set to 192 Khz sample rate with 2 channels over the headphone analog out. I haven't touched any...

Xonar Essense stx Random LOUD high pitched Ringing Noise?

Maybe try what reply #24 suggests?   http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&id=20090222084608127&board_id=21&model=Xonar%20Essence%20STX&page=3&count=49     Out of curiosity, is the cable from your PSU hooked up only to your STX and nothing else or is there are stuff along...

    Beyerdynamic DT-770 (Pro/80) vs. DT-770 (Pro/250) vs. DT-990 (Pro/250)

Yea, I think the sound quality combined with the coiled cable being a nuisance means I'm going to end up shipping these back. Looking on eBay and there are some on there for $150 new from a reputable seller. I may start a new thread for this question, but is that generally a safe thing to do...

    Beyerdynamic DT-770 (Pro/80) vs. DT-770 (Pro/250) vs. DT-990 (Pro/250)

Gave them a listen today. Hard to tell since they aren't broken in but it seems to me like they're how others described. More bass but not as controlled, slightly recessed mids.

    Beyerdynamic DT-770 (Pro/80) vs. DT-770 (Pro/250) vs. DT-990 (Pro/250)

Morning bump, will update with my impression of the Pro/250's later today.

    Beyerdynamic DT-770 (Pro/80) vs. DT-770 (Pro/250) vs. DT-990 (Pro/250)

Hmm maybe but more interested in just the headphones for now. Going to focus on which sound better there before changing the sound of the STX

    Beyerdynamic DT-770 (Pro/80) vs. DT-770 (Pro/250) vs. DT-990 (Pro/250)

They're in an Essence STX so driving them is not an issue. I've been reading a bit on these forums and it seems a lot of people say the 250 Ohms have more loose bass but less mids. I'm going to give them a listen tonight.

    Beyerdynamic DT-770 (Pro/80) vs. DT-770 (Pro/250) vs. DT-990 (Pro/250)

Title says it all. Up until a few weeks ago I owned the DT-770 (Pro/80) model and loved it. Both of the drivers ended up rattling (from what I've read probably due to hair getting in the drivers) so since I had them covered by squartrade I sent them back for a full refund instead of trying to...

The Xonar Essence STX Q/A, tweaking, impressions thread

Hey guys quick question about the STX. This card uses the same amp as the FiiO E9, correct? I was always worried when people say that so and so headphone with 250 ohm impedance requires a decent amp like the E9. I figured the amp on the STX wasn't super high quality because it wasn't a dedicated...

Xonar Essense stx Random LOUD high pitched Ringing Noise?

I use neither asio or wasapi. Yea I'm not sure about the screw either but we'll see.

Xonar Essense stx Random LOUD high pitched Ringing Noise?

I've had this problem too. Windows 7 x64. I sent it in to asus for repairs and they sent it back after a few days, but according to their site they didn't actually repair anything, I don't think. Hasn't happened in the month or two I've been using it since. The only thing I did differently was...

Beyerdynamic dt 770's 80 ohm or 250 ohm?

Quote: Do you happen to have a 250 ohm DT770 to test with it? Won't be able to afford a proper amp for some time so I want to be satisfied with just the STX and headphone combo, sounding like it might be best to stick to the 80 ohm version.

Beyerdynamic dt 770's 80 ohm or 250 ohm?

Quote: Because I doubt the xonar essence stx would be able to effectively drive that. Even though it's technically capable of it I doubt the overall quality would be as good as the 250 ohm version.

Beyerdynamic dt 770's 80 ohm or 250 ohm?

Thanks, I'll check it out. I was also considering the dt 990 250 ohms so this is extra helpful.

Beyerdynamic dt 770's 80 ohm or 250 ohm?

Hey so I'll be using these strictly on my computer which is hooked up to a xonar essence STX and no other amps/dac's. Which dt 770 would sound better, the 80 ohm or 250 ohm version? I'm a bit concerned about the ability of the essence STX to drive the 250 ohm version, but the built in amp says...

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

Oh yea, not saying that external is inherently better or anything, I'm just seeing if for the price of a good internal card ($200) you could buy an external setup that is better sounding than the sound card. Basically it comes down to me being ignorant of the quality of external DAC's and amps...

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

I'm mainly asking because I have an essence STX right now, but all I use it for are headphones and even though I game a lot, personally music quality is more important than sound effects. I'm wondering if I could have spent my money better by going the external DAC/amp route instead, and if so...

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

Quote: This was more or less what I was wondering. So $200 can buy a better external amp/DAC than the xonar essence's and creative titanium HD's? I guess I should do a bit more research into them then.

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

Well now that the thread is sufficiently derailed, how about this. Since you're already an expert on the ripping of lossless audio, how about you upload a couple of samples of songs ripped both losslessly and compressed to v0 and I'll tell you whether I can hear the difference between them. If I...

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

Well as a scientist it's too illogical for me to give up DBT's and give into placebo. I'm talking personally and statistically; I personally cannot tell the difference between 320/v0 mp3's and flac, and statistics show that the vast majority of people can't either. Again not saying it's not...

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

Quote: I mean my source files specifically, i'm not worried about them because there's no low bitrate 128kb/s mp3's or the like, all 320 and v0, which are audibly identical to lossless in all but the highest end equipment. This is aside the point of the thread though
  23. Fakeyfakerson

what exactly is the point of a sound card for headphone only listeners?

Ehh, I'm not too worried about my source files. In almost all DBT's 320/v0 mp3's are indistinguishable from lossless flac with the exception when using the highest grade equipment and listening to complex music. But that's a whole other story. Basically wondering if $200 can buy an external...
