I don't think the software plays a big difference, or any. Its just the GUI that you may or may not prefer.

Some are thicker and harder to bend. I also use CAT5, noticed no difference between that and other cables.

Being a D2 owner, I would not suggest the D2 if you like analytical sounds or a horrible GUI. There are only three buttons on it, so if you like switching volume and songs, you can do one or another. Fiio... YMMV. It plays little difference with the D2's ability to drive if you still want it...

Almost any wire will do in my opinion. I use cat5, it should be lossless since I don't experience any problems with LAN. I haven't heard silver or gold though.
