Is it just me or are the buttons a little mushy?  I don't get good feedback when I'm pushing them in to know if it worked or not.  Also, there's a bit more cord noise from the button section to the headphones themselves than I would like.  And something people should probably be prepared for...

I can't do it either with the Etymotic HF2. Just bought a set of the PFE122 and those are much better (though not perfect) for laying on my side. I find that the Etymotics just protude too much for side sleeping.

I don't have too much experience with other IEMs, only having tried 2 non-Etymotic models, but it's my understanding that it's going to be difficult to find isolation as good as Etymotic without going custom.

Not sure if it's mentioned earlier in the thread, but for what it's worth, I just bought the Meelec M6P as a backup and the standard accessories are slightly different on mine. You mention only "single-flange (3 sizes) and small silicone tri-flange tips"... so I'm sure that they just changed...

They're the smaller clear 3-flange ones.  For me, they were more comfortable than the regular 3-flange ones:        

Another thing to consider are the small frost tips.  Personally, out of all the Etymotic-brand tips, I liked those best.
