Question about the quality of iRiver H120 player's optical output...

Iriver's output is bit-perfect IF you configure it so (rockbox settings). ironmine, in your case using iriver is senseless. Get a Squeezebox Touch - it plays flacs etc from USB drive, does not require a separate server (although can use one), has a nice UI and in general is quite descent as a...

iRiver H120 - Sell or Keep?

Quote: I have iriver, I had listened to various ipods, imod, and most other modern players. When I say something, I only say it based on my direct experience. It is possible, though, that my understanding of "SQ" differs from somebody's and what is "fantastic" for someone is merely OK for...

iRiver H120 - Sell or Keep?

All those PMPs are more or less in the same leasue SQ-wise. Some are bit better, some are bit worse, but it is all the same anyway, Nothing special. Sure it is better than ipod, so what?

iRiver H120 - Sell or Keep?

The only reason to keep it is if you mod it (change a hard dtive to bigger one and maybe a battery), and then use it as a digital source with a good external dac\amp. As a standalone player it sucks just like all other players out there. If you don't have money to buy a DAC\amp - you better sell...

    RSA SR71b, quad mono balanced. img. 1 & 17 Review pg 32, 34, 68, UPDATED 4/2013 for Improved sound.

Well, it is not much less portable than Headroom Microamp. As for being out of production - it doesn't really matter, because if you want it, you can find it.

Can you hear the difference between Lossless and 320kb/s?

Quote: Sorry, ipod is not considered a quality source :) . But yes, in an everyday life using ipod and average headphones or earphones, they will be indistinguishable. However, on a good setup with a high quality source and with at-home listening, it will be no problem to tell them apart.

Can you hear the difference between Lossless and 320kb/s?

If you can't hear the difference between lossy and lossless, that's because either you are not trained to distinguish small nuances in sound, or don't know what to look for and how the differences present themselves, or use misic that was badly recorded, or your gear is not capable of presenting...

    RSA SR71b, quad mono balanced. img. 1 & 17 Review pg 32, 34, 68, UPDATED 4/2013 for Improved sound.

An example would be Sonosax SX-DA2 portable DAC\AMP, it has a truely balanced line output (XLR). It would be nice to try to use a fully balanced amp with it, although it's built-in SE amp is really good.

Idea: Portaphile DAP - lets work on it together....

Well, good luck, maybe in 2-4 years something like that will show up. I hope so too, because carrying around one brick is better that carrying aroun 2 bricks. However for me the sound quality is primary, so that brick must be way better than Sonosax, and that is very unlikely. But who knows? HFM...

Idea: Portaphile DAP - lets work on it together....

Czesc Kuba, this is a long, long, long and expensive way. Why don't you just make a shortcut and buy yourself a Sonosax SX-DA2 (that's Swiss-made portable professional DAC\AMP of very high quality) and connect it via optical to proven portable transport - good old iriver h140. You can get a...

    Sony PCM-D50 as DAP

I had my D50 for a while and found it very good, too, one of the very best DAPs available (sorry, imod doesn't come close). However, I sold it because it was PITA to deal with cards. If only Sony would allow usage of normal SD cards, I would probably keep it.   As for M10, it is worse than...

Poll: Who uses an iRiver H1x0 with digital out?

They can easily be found on Ebay, there is even a seller in Germany that sells refurbished irivers in excellent condition (don't know his name, a friend of mine bought from him and said that the player arrived in mint condition). It is really not a problem at all to buy one if you want it.

Poll: Who uses an iRiver H1x0 with digital out?

Well, the spdif out pad is clearly marked on the PCB, it is right near the optical out socket (see here). It is marked as SPDIF_TX - all you need is to tap to it and to the iriver's ground plane. However, when you do it, your optical out will not work, so what I did is I removed optical out...

Poll: Who uses an iRiver H1x0 with digital out?

None of them sound better. They are both absolutely not interesting in terms of sound auqlity. Using them as an analogue source is senseless, it is just as good as most other consumer MP3 players out there. For the same reason, feeding difital from h120 to h140 and then to amp is pretty...

aleXmod DAP vs Pico DAC/amp vs Clip vs iPod vs iPhone

Had a brief possibility to listen to a "premium" version of AlexMod recently (the one using 1794 DAC if I am not mistaken), with my twagg'ed Edition 8, and compare it to my portable reference - Sonosax SX-DA2. I was pretty surprised by how good AlexMod sounded. Quite close to Sonosax, although...

    portable DAC for iriver h120

I would probably agree with Sergey if there would not exist such thing as Sonosax SX-DA2. That's swiss-made professional portable DAC with a monitoring headphone amplifier built in. AES, toslink, coax digital inputs, XLR balanced line out, two 9v batteries (good for about 8 hours on the go)...

what so special about Ultrasone headphones?

S-logic may be a "marketing garbage" in cheaper 'sones, but it definitely works quite well in Edition 8. :)

aleXmod DAP vs Pico DAC/amp vs Clip vs iPod vs iPhone

I think he means "clear" or "clean" rather than "bright", which in audio is associated with excessive HF.
