Closed can options equivalent to the Sennheiser HD600

I don't want to derail this thread. The only closed backed headphones I've ever owned were Sennheiser's EH2200 with their tear shaped earcups. From what I remember they were fairly 'flat' and I liked them at a time when most headphones were like this although they didn't sound anywhere near as...

Closed can options equivalent to the Sennheiser HD600

Very elegantish. How's the FR compared with open backed.

    Long listening to headphones

If you have a single headphone and amplifier you might want to skip reading this. Although multiple headphone ownership is a desirable property for audiophiles it does come with some minor hazards. The part psychology plays in headphones is one. What you believe or have read may reinforce some...

    The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread

Replaced the drivers only with replacement HD600 drivers, works again. Left driver in picture can see two thin wires so perhaps springs not making connection. Right driver has no wire on left side so faulty.

    The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread

Tried my HD580 (2nd version flatplate) yesterday and no sound. HD650 cable was the first suspect but it works when swapped onto the HD650, so not the cable. Not the Centrance HiFi M8 either as this works with the HD650, so a signal is getting through to the drivers but no sound. The only thing I...

How long does the Audeze 2C need to break in?

There will be examples of when people returned headphones (or sold them) because after whatever 'burn-in' is they preferred the headphone as it was rather than that into which it changed. Although this case is probably dwarfed by the numbers of people who prefer the sound after a while. If one...

    The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread

That's remarkable although I seem to remember earlier in this discussion, another individual saying they liked it more than the same Hifiman headphone. If you'd like a slightly brighter, more analytical feel in the same form then the rare Jubilee from 1995 might be of interest. They are more...

How long does the Audeze 2C need to break in?

The old burn-in, break-in, run-in topic. If only someone could do some experiment with 1000 new Sennheiser HD650s and one 500 hr old HD650 (indistinguishable from new). I suppose the wealthy might not be interested enough to experiment and manufacturers might already know the result. Perhaps...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Well, are you getting a good seal on your Etymotic ER4SR ? If not they won't sound great without the bass and your brain will be continually trying to compensate for this. Assuming you are using the IEMs on the go in noisy environments this will also have an effect. Returning home to a...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Does the treble ever 'cool down' on Beyerdynamic headphones ? I've had my DT 880 for several years and it still is very bright and would be more bright if I removed the 1 ply of toilet paper. I wonder if the treble would reduce after more years of use or due to some change in the driver membrane...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

This is the exact opposite of my DT 880 (600Ω). It is if anything bass light at normal volumes but with elevated treble from 5-10kHz (spike at 8kHz) that makes most music sound bright and some instruments metallic. This is with 1 ply of toilet paper over the drivers. So the only possibilities I...

    Looking for some neutral/mid-centric headphones

The OP does have quite an intriguing set of headphones. I wonder how much ones collection says about the person. The Hifiman Sundara seems very popular these days. Don't know how much of a change that would be from the HE400i.

    Looking for some neutral/mid-centric headphones

Sennheiser HD580/600/650. HD580 is only available used, quite cheap and similar sound to HD600. A little plainer compared to the more modern versions. HD600 is more refined and elegant sounding. HD650 a little more bass and slightly less treble as well as fuller sounding. All have great...

Is 'slam'/'macrodynamics'/'impact' a real thing? (Outside of frequency response)

My headphones don't seem to me to compress the sound, so by your logic they should slam pretty hard. But I find them to be very natural and don't have accentuated attack. So if I recorded a drum only at a constant level, a hard slamming headphone won't have any effect ?

Overall I prefer the distortion characteristics of my 600Ω to a 32Ω version.

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I fell into that trap 600Ω > 250Ω so it must be better. I wish I had the lower impedance one now. There were loads of 250Ω for sale and I was looking for the rarer 600Ω. Another mistake was not realising how insensitive this headphone was. Wrong again I'm afraid. The 32Ω doesn't get as much love...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I wish I had a pound for every time someone wrote 'it's subjective'. Many years ago I wrote on a thread that dropped like a rock through headfi: 3. The myth that audio sound quality is purely subjective Just because a person likes a contortion of a recording doesn't mean an accurate...

    The Centrance HiFi M8 thread

Still using my V1, so very convenient with Apple devices. I like its simplicity. For me a DAC/Amplifier should just be a large transportable battery powered, 'wire with gain'. One large (hall effect) volume dial and a 1/4" (6.35mm) jack on the front and a USB type A female on the back that's...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Beyerdynamic seems fond of their "Mt Beyer" 8kHz peak. It's on mine. I've been looking at AKG's K702 because it's relatively inexpensive here in Europa but other than curiosity (no two headphones ever seem to have identical sound signatures) it seemed a bit too similar to the DT 880. I've only...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

Don't most dynamic driver headphones suffer from bass distortion to some lesser or greater extent. Planar magnetics are superior in this respect only they don't usually have what the DT 880 has a lot of ie. treble. I tried listening at high volumes to my DT 880 (600Ω) and could only hear...

Is 'slam'/'macrodynamics'/'impact' a real thing? (Outside of frequency response)

Yes, there must be more than just inaccuracy or exaggeration. I suppose until you've actually experienced over a period of months at home the subtleties of the 'slam' of a £4-6K flagship headphone. It's intriguing for those of us who have never come across this that for this amount you might be...

Is 'slam'/'macrodynamics'/'impact' a real thing? (Outside of frequency response)

I am a little surprised that some high end headphones incorporate 'slam'. @Sajid Amit in his table shows the Abyss AB-1266 phi TC to have a strong attack. I thought they would all be like the Hifiman Susvara Ie. going for TDC in attack for flagships...

Is 'slam'/'macrodynamics'/'impact' a real thing? (Outside of frequency response)

How 'slam' is achieved is a mystery to me. I don't think any of my headphones have this characteristic emphasised but that's difficult to assess. A headphone that slams a lot must be inherently an unnatural sounding headphone. Like most alterations distortion is never far away, if your amplifier...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I don't consider myself as treble sensitive. The DT 880s are the first bright headphones I have come across. Because I'm not listening at high volumes I don't find the treble particularly fatiguing as such, it's just the bright nature due to the suppressed bass irritates me. This is compounded...

No, I was quite interested in them a little while ago. However their availability is not good here and they are quite expensive.
