Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Just plugged the iFi iPurifier3.0 into the Wadia 151 USB input. Every thing sounds better: bigger, more dynamic and coherent, quieter . . . Class D just got pleasantly plumper. : ) Definitely a worthwhile tweak for this "Million Dollar" mid-fi rig. (The whole rig costs less than 1/2 the price...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Almost bought the Jotunheim 2. Also have a hybrid headphone amp at the shop for servicing that I may try with Sundara later, but that will require a DAC upgrade (which I am trying to (economically) avoid). My first use of power/integrated amplifiers to drive headphones came about when I had...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Initially, I used the Dragonfly Black and Cobalt with the Sundara: sound was good. (Gave the Red to my nephew. [Much] preferred the Black v1.5 to the Cobalt.) Next, I used the Dragonfly as a preamp with the SMSL SP200 headphone amplifier: sound was better, more dynamic and open-sounding...
  4. Shure SHR440

Shure SHR 440 closed back studio headphones in very good condition. Respectable, entry level sound for the aspiring head-fier. Detachable cable. No box or threaded 1/8" to 1/4" adapter, but headphones will be packed carefully. MSRP: $125 (street price: $99); Asking: $35, shipped ConUS.

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

The Sundara definitely improve--as in: really "open up"--over time, IMHO. The iFi Zen DAC V2 is rated 230mW@32ohms. Several users say (and I tend to agree) that the Sundara (37ohms) need at least 1 watt to begin to show their potential (so the Zen DAC may not be enough). With the Sundara, I...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Am really enjoying the Sundara with the 4x 22AWG Neotech UPOCC solid core copper cable. The copper brings complementary liquidity and warmer tonality to the Sundara, while optimizing the sense of space.

Definitely the sweet spot--and my personal favorites--within the seminal AHD line. GLWS!

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Wow! These Sundara are really coming into their own--maybe the "break-in threshold" has been crossed. Just added the iFi iSilencer+ today, so that might have something to do with it. The USB Disruptor and iFi iPurifier3 are en route as we speak. Best thing I ever did was drive to them with the...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

HifiMAN, I believe, in addition to changing the earpads with the Sundara 2020/1, also went to an OCC instead of an OFC cable. Meze's cable may be regular OFC. When I had the Empyrean, I didn't care for the stock cable that came with them. In all fairness, too, I should get out the Sundara's...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

Do you notice any improvement(s) in sound with the Meze cable? One of the cables I am using is an 8-cores with 4x 28AWG Neotech UPOCC solid silver wire + 4x 24AWG Neotech UPOCC solid copper wire, Neutrik terminations and Mundorf Supreme solder.

Do you have an extra, working cable? You can check to see if the problem is at the plug end of the cable or if it's the jack inside the headphone. (Hopefully not the latter case.) The stock cable is of poor quality; I switched to an aftermarket cable immediately after getting the Sundara.

    Speaker amps for headphones

When I had the HEDDphone, I drove them with the speaker outputs from a Jeff Rowland Model 2 power amp through Endler Attenuators. Don't know what the headphone out rating is for the Audiolab. Headphone out on the Wyred4Sound not enough to drive the Sundara satisfactorily, IMHO. Plan to try the...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

IMHO, 0.75 watt is not enough. At least 1 watt. 2 watts are probably better, based on my experiences. So far, I have driven the Sundara with the Dragonfly Cobalt, the DF Black v1.5, the S.M.S.L. SP200 and the Wadia 151 PowerDAC mini [an integrated amp with onboard DAC, using an adapter...

Hifiman Sundara (HE400i upgraded, around $500)

The Sundara are pairing well with the Wadia 151PowerDAC mini (Class D, 25wpc/8 ohms), driven directly from the speaker outputs. Much more authoritative and musical-sounding compared to the SP200. Excellent separation and imaging, along with improved dynamics and finer sense of detail across the...

    Speaker amps for headphones

The Sundara are pairing well with the Wadia 151PowerDAC mini (Class D, 25wpc/8 ohms), delivering an estimated 5-6wpc to the 37ohm Sundara. Excellent separation and imaging, along with improved dynamics and finer sense of detail across the frequency spectrum. Very comfortable listening level(s)...
