LH Labs Geek Out v2+ Discussion Thread

Does anyone know if the Geek Out V2+ can work with a dead battery when plugged in the USB port of a computer?

    Light Harmonic GEEK

So does anyone know if the higher powered versions have an incidence on noise floor and distortion?   And what about the higher order harmonic distortion that was shown on the ES9018M?

    Light Harmonic GEEK

Has anyone seen the measurements for the GEEK since the switch to the ES9018M?   I've seen the measurements for the GEEK Pulse, there seems to be quite a lot of high order harmonics.   Do we know whether going from the normal GEEK to the Super Duper GEEK raises noisefloor and THD?

    Recording quality?

Quote:   Have you ever gotten mixes/recordings that were so bad that you went "no amount of mastering can save that, re-record and redo the mix please!".

Why are there so few headphones that can cover the full audio range well?

It wouldn't help much actually, you'd get a flat response, but with zero reverb, and mastering rooms aren't reverb free environments either,

Old music recording remaster process ?

We are talking of two different things, you are considering the technology from the pov of the record collector and I'm considering it in a general pov.

Old music recording remaster process ?

When comparing different technologies, it's usually more appropriate to ignore factors external to the technology itself. It's basically like claiming that SACD is a better technology because there exists better masters taht were only released on SACD.

Old music recording remaster process ?

Compared to the master tape, vinyl is a very degraded source.

    What does 24/96 mean?

Quote:   Another example of sampling rate and bit depth.   - Screen resolution is a 2 dimensional sampling rate, horizontal and vertical, the point is that once you get past the "Apple Retina" resolution (~300 dpi), there's no visible progress any more. It's the same for audio. Peer...

12 Extremely Disappointing Facts About Popular Music

Quote:   That doesn't really change my point, we aren't in the era of super stars any more, for example, Florence + the Machine is talented, will she sell as much as the Rolling Stones? I think not. Any album list is not only related to how talented the artists are, it's more a rating...

Skullcandy Mix Master Mike versus Audeze LCD-3

Quote:   The overall volume in terms of SPL doesn't change much, but the interesting question is how the ear (and the brain) perceives the second harmonic.

    Testing audiophile claims and myths

Not at all, I have on very rare occasions seen dragonfruits in France, but I've never seen sugar-apples, I presume it's the same in the Netherlands. If you have Asian markets newr where you live, that's usually where you can find really exotic fruits, like durians ( :D ) for example.

Dragonfruits are ok, but the sugar-apples beside them are absolutely delicious.:D

FLAC and WavPack skip but ALAC doesn't?

It's has nothing to do with the format (FLAC, Wavpack, ALAC), it was a ripping issue. The process goes like this: CD > Ripping > Temporary Wav > Encoding > Compressed file (Flac/Wavpack/Alac...) The ripping routine of Foobar and iTunes is different and the errors that occured when you read the...

    FLAC vs Apple LossLess

What you need to do is uncheck the box "let iTunes organize my music folders", you won't have further problems with mixed up albums. By the way, Flac and Alac are strictly identical as far as sound quality is concerned. Finally, should you still want to have Flacs instead of Alacs, there's no...

    Accurate sound = musical sound?

On the other hand, if it's mastered in a neutral environment to sound good in the said environment, you can bet it will sound good in an accurate system (room included). Example of neutral location: FR curves with purely passive corrections (1/12 octave) I'm freaking impressed. Entire...

    Accurate sound = musical sound?

No, well mastered music = musical sound. If your music was mastered to sound good on ibuds without much care of how it would sound on an accurate system, it's probable that it will sound rather average on an accurate system.

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

Background noise would be audible if we reduced bit depth, I have ABX'ed successfully 16 and 14 bit files. (same origin, volume and time aligned)

Poll: Can you hear sound over 20kHz?

Indeed. And considering that no microphone is linear up to 20 kHz.... yeah it's pretty useless.

Poll: Can you hear sound over 20kHz?

I am skeptical at that claim, given a sampled 22.05 kHz sine wave and a 44.1 kHz, it's will be reconstructed into a 22.05 kHz sine wave; if it were reconstructed into a 22.05 kHz triangle wave, it would require an infinity of harmonics.

Poll: Can you hear sound over 20kHz?

It come from the theorem of Nyquist Shannon, to reconstruct a signal band limited to 20 kHz (sound), you have to sample it at double its frequency, in this case 40 kHz. For CDs, the sample rate is 44.1 kHz, means that the reconstructed sound can have frequencies up to 22.05 kHz.
