    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I use them with my Sony ZX2 and they sound fantastic and powerful (for my purposes). And let's be honest--Sony has never been known for powerful portable DAPs.

Cayin i5 Lossless Android DAP with AKM4490 DAC supporting 32/384 PCM + 64/128 DSD

Well, I'm glad you clarified Cayin's rationale. I certainly wish you luck, as the i5 still looks like a great DAP. Perhaps I'll check back in a few months to see where its development stands.

Cayin i5 Lossless Android DAP with AKM4490 DAC supporting 32/384 PCM + 64/128 DSD

That's unfortunate. I was looking forward to the "maturing" of the i5 as an all-in-one Android solution that could not only deliver great sounding audio, but could also perform other Android tasks well.   Frankly, if Cayin isn't going to address any issues like these when they arise, I really...

Perhaps I should say "imitation pleather"? That's right...when 100% pleather is just too costly for your listening needs, come on down to Cal's House of Cheapness! We've got all your faux merchandise in stock, like this genuine Magnetbox and Sorny! :p

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

My last two non-IEM headphones have effectively worn out from under my ears--thanks primarily to artificial pleather ears cups simply disintegrating. I'm being SO careful with the HD700s. I want these to last as long as possible. I even have a small paint brush handy that I use to brush off any...

Cayin i5 Lossless Android DAP with AKM4490 DAC supporting 32/384 PCM + 64/128 DSD

While it's not a review of the i5, it is mentioned in this particular review of the AK70--and he makes some comparative statements between the i5 and other DAPs. http://www.headfonia.com/review-astellkern-ak70-geniality/2/

    SONY NW-ZX2 DAP

So, I thought I'd throw this out there as I don't recall ever seeing a concrete conclusion on the topic.   I know it's been stated before that some people have experienced situations in which the navigation buttons on the ZX2 stop responding intermittently. Having used the ZX2 for 1.5 years, I...

    New iRiver AK70

Kinda interested in checking out the AK70. Had an AK Jr about a year ago. It was an impressive piece of equipment. But for me, it had one fatal flaw: playlists. http://www.head-fi.org/t/764034/astell-kern-junior-ak-jr-impressions-thread/690#post_11762406 So I'm wondering if anyone can provide...

    SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A

The 1A has my attention for one reason: Power. If it can deliver a similar sound signature compared to the ZX2, but with a lot more power behind it (and retain a battery life that is head and shoulders above the likes of, well, every other DAP manufacturer), then it's definitely going to remain...

    SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A

Does that just apply to the 1Z? Because the 1A and ZX2 are priced, essentially, the same. So I'm not sure how "all out" the 1A design could be compared to the ZX2.

HA! Coming from the IE800, I noticed that effect immediately on all of my other headphones/IEMs. It was why I was worried that when I began searching for a new full-sized, over ear headphone, it would result in me finding something that sounded just as muffled or veiled. Which is also why, when...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I can confirm from personal experience that the HD700 work very nicely with Jpop—yes, a lot of groups/singers appear to use meticulous engineering/recording/mastering techniques, which results in nice dynamic songs.   As far as burn-in? Frankly, to my ears, the HD700 did not change in any...

    SONY NW-ZX2 DAP

For me, the 1A is interesting if only because of the extra power to drive larger and less efficient headphones. On the flip side, I'm not particularly happy that the 1A retains less flexibility compared to the ZX2, like not using Android (which means the 1A can't be used for any incidental...

    SONY NW-ZX2 DAP

Frankly, I wouldn't worry too much about the longevity of the battery. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery Typical wear for a Li-ion battery is that it will be reduced to 80% of its original capacity after 500 recharge cycles. It's important to note that they mean full...

    SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A

HA!   So, this will probably effect very few of you, but I thought I'd point it out anyway.   First, it looks like the 1Z can be pre-ordered at Amazon:   https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KL958RY?ie=UTF8&tag=sonyelect08-20   Second, is something for those of you who happen to have a Discover...

    SONY NW-ZX2 DAP

The ZX2 does use a TRRS connection. However, instead of two channels being fed from two DACs, the only aspect that the ZX2 takes advantage of is that it implements a separate ground for both the L and R channels—which supposedly helps to eliminate cross talk and enhance channel separation.

    SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A

After a couple of product generations working with Android on their Walkmans, I'm willing to bet Sony wasn't going to throw that knowledge away.     Judging purely on the "look and feel" of that screen shot, it's very reminiscent of Jellybean/Kitkat. So I'm wondering if perhaps the OS is...

    SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A

So, since Sony stamped "balanced" on this new DAP instead of "separate grounds", like the ZX2 has, does that mean we'll be getting something with two S-Master chips?   Granted, I never followed its technical design in any detail, but I thought it was fundamentally different from other DAC...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

Agreed. I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I think the v-shaped signature on the IE800 is a bit more pronounced, thus it lends itself well to helping poorly-recorded tracks sound a bit more dynamic, since both the bass and treble has that extra emphasis.   And yes, IE800 for portable and HD700...

    SONY NW-WM1Z / WM1A

It's nice to see that the "mere mortal" version will support both output jacks. And I like the design of the chassis. It sort of seems like a combination of the ZX1 and ZX2. It's black, like the ZX2, but appears to have a mostly "brushed" finish like the ZX1. And the buttons are not recessed as...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

Better? That's hard to say.   As I mentioned before, I find the sound signatures between both very similar. As Dazzerfong pointed out, the sound stage on the IE800 is much smaller than the HD700. On the flip side, I'm not sure if it's because of that smaller sound stage, or other factors...

The "blue dragon sheath", for lack of a better term is fine. It's the black-clad material used at the y-split that is pretty rigid and microphonic. I've heard worse--I use the ie800 too, after all. Widely regarded as having a cable with among the worst microphonics around. ;)

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I haven't spent any time evaluating the difference between the two just yet. I essentially started off with the Blue Dragon, instead of starting off with the stock cable. I've never been a staunch believer in the value of custom cables for increased sonic capabilities. In my case, I was more...

    SONY NW-ZX2 DAP

I believe the general consensus was that the stock payer (even with the audio enhancement app disabled) still had access to all the various hardware nooks and crannies, whereas other third party apps do not. Thus, the stock app should end up sounding best.
