Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

On the power cable front: I have never tested any aftermarket power cables so I have no data based opinion. But socially, it seems that the existence of aftermarket power cables and conditioners is an implicit criticism of the audio equipment designers. An aftermarket power cable that helps...

dCS Ring DAC - A Technical Explanation

I was speaking ironically Ragnar, so I actually agree with you. I am sorry that I did not notice your location. Ironic comment can be very poor communication to people from other countries. I actually do not agree with people who criticize a specific technology without listening. I think a...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Those are all great foods to try in the greater Cincinnati area. Our chili has spread as far north as Bowling Green, Ohio and as far East as Jackson, Ohio, I am told. When Cincinnatians go on vacation for a week or more the first thing we must do on arrival home is find a chili parlor. Frisch's...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Cincinnati Chili is an odd bird, invented by Greek immigrants, only in Cincinnati do people ever say, "Western Chili" to distinguish what other people just call "Normal" chili. Some like it, others hate it. It is claimed to have cinnamon or allspice or even chocolate as ingredients. It is...

My wife is a proud Hoosier. The pork tenderloin sandwiches in neighboring Ohio, even within sight of the Indiana line, are inferior to the Indiana models.

    Official Schiit Vali 2 Thread

OK, time for confessions. I was pretty skeptical about tube rolling. I did hear the difference between my Schiit Modi (3+) and the built in DAC on my computer's motherboard. But that was a $100 DAC versus a probably $2 chip. I also heard it when I added the Vali (2+), but it wasn't a huge...

That looks nice. The plexiglass looks like it might make the tube run hotter. Is it to stop kids from touching it? Edit: Sorry, read your very first post, the plexiglass is for dust then?

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

I loved this comment, "For a group of seemingly smart guys, you folks seem to waste a lot of time chasing after some specious and irrelevant bull. Let me be the first to congratulate you (other than yourselves) for your tireless efforts on behalf of the audio community." And this reply, "I...

PC Speakers (of the kinda budget but not tin-can variety)

I have no experience with those. I’ve used Klipsch R51-PM’s they sounded great near field. Lots of input options. The R41 are cheaper but I think similar. it is frustrating, almost anything sold in large numbers on Amazon has conflicting reviews, most love but ten percent or so say it is junk.

dCS Ring DAC - A Technical Explanation

Tires, glues and aircraft all get extreme tests that may not represent actual usage, but are standardized. So a new product can be compared to predecessor products under standard conditions. For example a new passenger aircraft has it's wings loaded to 150% of the most extreme forces expected...

dCS Ring DAC - A Technical Explanation

Question: in the block diagram how does the digital filter downstream of the ADC distinguish between a real 1000 Hz signal and a false 1000 Hz signal created as shown in the second picture, created by the 44.1k to 43.1k difference?

My favorite supplier foul up. $4 fasteners were purchased in lots of 4500 pieces. They started breaking at assembly. Pieces from spares (an old lot) did not break. Supplier told us their process was unchanged, the parts were good, we were mis-installing them. Measurements with simple gauges...

I've been wanting to listen to some of these in mono, preferably on a 1960's style speaker (one large woofer and one paper tweeter in a big open back cabinet.) None of my equipment has a mono setting. Some of my nice CD's came from mono mastered LPs. Benny Goodman's "B.G. in Hi-Fi" is mono, as...

We use them. But vendors never 100% inspect all dimensions. So Charlie (or Hui) sets up a machine wrong and that hole which is “always right because the process is controlled” suddenly moves. But our first article inspection proved it was correct. Suddenly we have 200 parts that are promised to...

And experiments can be interpreted very self-centeredly. Audio people often seem to do one experiment and say, "See, I told you!" Or link to one experiment and say the same thing. A theory is rightly proven when many experiments, done by different people, confirm the results. Confirmation need...

I drank wine with a real expert once. I am an expert in $12 reds, in those days it was $10 reds. He ordered a bottle of something and it was poured into an unusually-shaped decanter. He told me "this is the only $70 per bottle wine that is worth drinking." The special decanter had some magic...

You are correct. The problem is perhaps insoluble. This may be why people who demand science flock to THD as "the answer." THD may signify very little, but at least it can be precisely measured. On the other hand Taguchi would call sleep, workday, stress, hunger, and sex "noise" and attempt to...
