@Dobrescu George:  The statement you make about noise floors in living spaces being 75-80 dB is simply incorrect.  Engineering norms prescribe maximum 50 dB(A) for indoor living spaces, 30 dB(A) for bedrooms.  I don't need to point out that the scale is logarithmic.

The Official Violectric V200 Owner's Club / Appreciation / Discussion Thread

I guess you have the right connection gizmo 'cause AKG K1K terminates in 4-pin XLR if memory serves.   Also, I'm afraid you won't get enough juice.  They're 74 dB/mW or thereabouts.  I never heard them (unfortunately) but I know that my HE-6 doesn't really shine from the V200, and a HE-6 is...

    La Figaro 339

Svetlana:  do you mean a 6H13C ('winged C') tube?  Take a look at the specs, notably the gain, and compare with the GE.  Volume match by measuring, not by the dial.  Then see if you hear a difference.  This is one of the prime reasons why people like the 5998/2399 tubes so much.

Violectric HPA V281 - Vorsprung durch Balanced

Don't own a V281 but I'm not so sure that the part highlighted above is actually a good thing.  Not a cable believer.  The one thing I can tell you, owning a V200 and having tried the Taurus Mk2 (apples and oranges, I agree) is that the Taurus strikes me as more neutral, 'airy' and fast.  All a...

How Can I Trust Head-Fi Reviews?

There obviously is justification bias.  But your reasoning appears fallacious to me to the extent that it seems to imply that the existence of one deficiency could be justification for the another one (bias towards manufacturer).   I'm not attacking you in any way, and have no reason to doubt...

How Can I Trust Head-Fi Reviews?

If anything online is available for free, then you're the product.   But don't fret, there's no law obliging you to purchase, just don't get carried away by the hype-wave.  And to the credit of this site and the mods:  you don't get banned that quickly.

How Can I Trust Head-Fi Reviews?

Tickling British pickle or whatever but you're stating the obvious:  precious few reviews can be trusted.    First of all, because you're navigating a huge marketing platform whose core objective it is to whip up mass hysteria about a product and create a need that you weren't even aware of...

    The Leben CS300XS Thread

Very nice job on the comparisons and fwiw, it agrees completely with my own opinion, owning the V200/V800 combo and having compared them with the Conductor on my HD-800, HE-500 and HE-6.  For the 6 neither combo brings out the best but otherwise, yeah, the Vio's are more laid-back, darker...

Chatham/TS 2399: on pair for sale.

SOLD     See pic below, this is the  pair that's for sale.  I'm selling simply because I need to make room and have too many tubes lying around collecting dust.   Some tubes have to go or my wife walks.  My wife walking risks costing me money so it's an easy choice ;-)   There are some...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

You could try it as described above but be aware that there's a possibility that you'll fry the component (or in a worst case scenario the pcb).  I don't know what the component you're trying to insert deeper looks like so maybe the following is totally impossible but you might be able to cut...

    Hifiman HE1000 Planar Dynamic Headphone

Many thanks, this is very helpful, especially because you give your impressions of how a HD-800 sounds to you as a baseline.  Wonder how much of what you heard was the amp and how much the cans of course, with tubes or a hybrid tube/ss design its hard to tell.  Like you, I don't find the HD-800...

    Hifiman HE1000 Planar Dynamic Headphone

It's a factual statement, no BS.  But obviously, if someone doesn't like the price they shouldn't buy it.     And the reasoning that goes 'oh, if they sold the xxx at 3x kUSD then for sure the HE-1000 at x kUSD will be totally worth it' is so flawed I wouldn't even know where to begin.  But...

    Hifiman HE1000 Planar Dynamic Headphone

Speakers are something else entirely....even with 30k you can easily end up with a subpar setup.  Not to mention that they don't pair too well with early dawn listening habits, city centre living, litigious neighbours and a wife who doesn't share one's taste in music.  None of the problems...

    Hifiman HE1000 Planar Dynamic Headphone

Well, Fang is (rightly) riding for Fang, not for our financial benefit.  In the end the market reaction will determine the success.   I'm sure he has (or will be) doing some survey to determine optimum pricing.  But assuming it will be priced at around 3-5kUSD it would have to be a serious heavy...

Violectric HPA V281 - Vorsprung durch Balanced

It means that the maximum signal it will accept is equivalent to 8.69 Vrms coming in.  Standard redbook output is 2 Vrms for 0 dBFS....  The problem is that the standard is really no standard.  Some sources go way below, some are higher (such as broadcasting standard in Germany).  Most gear is...

Well, what looks like a curse to you seems like a blessing in the EU...counting import duty, VAT and handling charge I arrive at the EUR equivalent of 3173 USD or 3782 CAD.  But we'll see about pricing.  Anyway, I'm not in the running for this one.

Violectric HPA V281 - Vorsprung durch Balanced

I'll go out on a limb here because I think in the end it largely depends on the way the volume pot is implemented in the circuit and the overall design quality (neither of which are afaik an issue with the Vio amps).  First of all, working with the pre-gain gives you more usable range and...

Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

Add my voice to the chorus singing the praise of speaker amps for the HE-6.  It took me some time to come to this conclusion and in the beginning I thought it nonsense that a headphone could benefit from all that extra juice.  Preproman here convinced me to forget my XLS-sheet and give it a try...

Violectric HPA V281 - Vorsprung durch Balanced

Or the ground lift was used to tackle some noise issue (I assume it's basically the same configuration as for the V200, didn't check).  But even then I don't easily see how static electricity could trigger the protection relay.   Anyway, it needs looking into.

Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

I took a quick peak and guesstimate you have about 27 dB gain from it.  If you use 10R series resistance and 1R parallel you'll drop about 20dB but there's no fast way to determine if that'll be enough or not, you will have to experiment a bit.  Make sure the resistors can handle the power...

    HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone

Pioneer SX-1980, also for the HE-6 via the headphone out.  I got it cheap as it was a US voltage version sold in Europe, cleaned it up and recapped it, still have to do the tuner section though.  Same experience as you have.  It's one heavy mother, that's about the only drawback.

Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

You use the 100R in series and 3R in parallel, right?  That's  31 dB attenuation   assuming your HE-6 has a perfect 50Z.  Ye Gods.... going to look up the specs on that beast.  I see why you went for the 10W rated ones.

Amps that can drive the HiFiMan HE-6 planar headphones

^ No argument at all with the above, it's correct as I understand it.  But what wuwhere was trying to say according to his post was that there is an audible difference in sound quality between cheap and expensive resistor brands (Vishay) in the connector box plugged in to the amp.  And there I...

Violectric HPA V281 - Vorsprung durch Balanced

What I say is that they don't make one whit of a difference in objective terms.  But I don't want to write more about my opinion here because these discussions degrade in pointless deaf-man arguments.  If you think you can 'prove' that they make a difference, go to the sound science forum and...
