they sll small passive preamp on ebay for cars for like 6-8 bucks, for forgot the name try sub controller, or passive volume controller I bought one and it worksgood except at really low volumes the left right volume are matvhed perfectly.- Kawai_man

Where is the pitfall? [MBP -> Speakers]
What it is ,is the volume pot the higher u turn it up the the less masking effect on the sound it has, its how they are thats why people modify theyre amps with stepped attenuators, digital attenuation doesnt mask so much so its better to turn the volume as high as youu can and just usee the...- Kawai_man

They do and they sound really great butthey dont get it perfect and you will still get a degree of smudginess where the crossover point is. For hometheater use anything below 80hz gets sent to the sub so the lack of low end wont be a major factor also I recomend sealed enclosures for them... -

At ur budget u have many choices in active mintors, youll get better sound quality than computer speakers, only con is theres no sub if you you want that really overhyped boomy bass, of course u can add a sub but that would add to the cost.- Kawai_man

Im sure theres a dac that has a good headphone amp and has balanced outputs to get the most out of your monitors ,headphone amps are over hyped here I wouldnt worry to much, those headphones areare good tI had them before they dont need an amp to sound good, they are sensitive.- Kawai_man

Youre looking at speakers whete the crossover point in the mid frequencies this will lower the clarity of voices, look into full range single drivers there are not many ones I know, theres the orb audio speakers and the ones from gallo. -
