    Sony MDR-XB500 vs Sony MDR-XB700

I went with the 500's after auditioning both coming to the conclusion that: 1/ The 700's didn't do anything that my Ultrasone DJ1's could do better with the right EQ settings. 2/ I wanted a bassy can that didn't need amping to do it's stuff. (Both the XB700 and the DJ1 need amping for maximum...

FIGHT THE BEATS HYPE (Ultrasone HFI-580/HFI 580 appreciation thread)

Quote: I asked Ultrasone the same question and the answer I got was that they use the same drivers and are effectively the same headphones. However, with regard to Ultrasone's own tech specs the DJ1 is allegedly 104db SPL where as the HFI580 is 101db SPL. I have heard them both side...

    DJ headphones 101

Quote: They are superb for mixing, good isolation, compact form factor, look great and they are as tough-as-old-boots.   I gave mine to a dj friend in need and I replaced them with AKG 518DJ as my around-town portable can and at one third of the price they are a bargain with...

    DJ headphones 101

Quote:   Interesting, I find my DJ1's to be quite comfortable and they fold down small for a full-sized can.   If the DJ1's are huge, then the DJ1-PRO must have it's own gravitational pull.....     Sound quality is simply stellar for a headphone in it's price range.

Best headphones for Trance and techno music ?

Quote: Ultrasone DJ1 / HFI-580, absolutely phenomenal for trance. Punchy fast bass that goes sub-woofer deep. Hight are crystal clear. Alot of headphone for the money.

Best headphones for Trance and techno music ?

Quote: What sources will you be running them with? (ipod? laptop? vintage Marantz receiver? etc)   There really is no better basshead can for the money than the Sony XB-500.

    Allen & Heath XD-53 vs DJ1's vs. HFI-580

Haven't heard the XD-53 but the other 2 (580 and DJ1) will need amping to get the bass impact that you crave.   If you want killer bass straight out of a portable, the Sony XB-500 is a good way to go.

FIGHT THE BEATS HYPE (Ultrasone HFI-580/HFI 580 appreciation thread)

Quote:   The 680's are a great pair of cans but they don't go as low as the 580's, the mids however are more pronounced and they don't have the occasionally painful treble of the 780's

    AKG or Sennheiser

I have both and for portable, around town use the AKG's rule.   Not really a fair comparison though, the 238 is open, the 518 is closed.   What are you listening to and what will you be plugging them into?
