    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I plugged in my 600ohmers into my macbook (apple lossless tunes) for the first time.  It sounds better than I thought but not nearly as effortless and involving as my "electric ave".  Harder and sterile sounding - my ears are feeling uncomfortable only after a few minutes where I can listen in...

Making own tube amp from scratch?

I built that one years ago.  Good friend of mine built another at the same time.  I'm sure others had great success but It turned me off to OTL.  It sounded really good when I luckily acquired a very rare Telefunkin 6080 but it did not have a lotta life in it and I eventually had some issues...

Making own tube amp from scratch?

Something to entertain is to go kit on first go.  It's pretty much guarenteed success.  Scratch has more potential of less desireable sound particularly on first effort.  The last thing I'd want to do is dissuade someone from building from scratch - but it can be frustrating and patience is a...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

You struck a chord...  Outside of DT880, I have only one headphone that I really wish to hear specifically with my amp.  Not craving in any way but looking forward to time with the HD600 at some point.  300ohm would work quite nice and they are obviously loved by many.

Quote:   Hmmm.  At the tail end of my headphone swapping mania, before I found deep satisfaction with DT880/600 (it's been 3-4 years now), was Stax SR-303.  All my amps are "home" built and for the Stax, I built a few versions of Andrea Ciuffoli's Stax amp - reference his 6SL7-6BX7...

    Post pics of your builds....

Something I have been listening to for at least a few years - my only rig and never an urge to change (after years of change up to this combo).  I told myself to post after I built transformer covers that match the base but I've never got around to it - hence the delay in post.  The circuit is...

    Rebuilding an old tube amp.

Both tubes, 6eu7 and 12ax7 are high mu. Both 100 amp factor

    Rebuilding an old tube amp.

What amp are you referring to? No "output caps" in the magnavox.

    Rebuilding an old tube amp.

Good work on cap replacement - the signal caps between the plate of each 6EU7 triode and the grid of each 6BQ5 (get yourself the data sheets to see what pins I mean) would be good to swap in particular. Regarding DC, there are a million ways to skin this - at least for temporary...

    Rebuilding an old tube amp.

I believe for better help you should mention what you have.  It's a single ended 6BQ5 (EL84) amp from an old Magnavox console.  Around 4W.  The two 6BQ5's are driven by a super hi mu 6EU7 dual triode.  Rectifier is 6CA4. It's a really nice amp.  I have a few recommendations: Remove the...

    Sennheiser HD-428 / HD-428s Modding Guide - January 2013

Didn't want to start a new thread for a simple question... I am considering the HD428's for my 8 year old daughter - would they fit small heads? Thank You.

    [REVIEW] Phiaton PS210 - The Half-Blood Prince

Thank you Clieos for the review of the PS210's.  I sprung for a set a month ago and I'm impressed - listen to them daily.  I have little IEM experience and surprised by the physical and sound quality of these - the detail and particularly open soundstage is better than I expected. I think your...

Custom Built Tube Amp - V51 (as shown on Inner Fidelity) - retracted

You would not use a preamp for this amp - it drives LCD2's perfectly straight from a CDP source or whatever you use.  Tube is high gain 7788 (E810F) in triode mode so plenty of amp factor.  Another example of an amplifier using the same single tube per channel, although different topology, by...

Official NYC spring meet 2012 impression thread

Thanks all for a very fun and ear-opening day - enjoyed it immensely.     Special thanks to ivanrocks321 for stopping over with his K1000's and HP-1's - those two headphones were a great treat - just loved the liveliness and energy they present. To nspindel for bringing his Eddie Current...

Official NYC Meet Sat June 2nd 2012

Quote: Hello Nikongod, Only one issue - it's for high impedance HP's only.  The OPT secondary is 500ohm and low impedance phones would reflect to the primary and cause a very low primary. Now that I write I could bring another pair of OPT's for low impedance but not sure if I wish to...

Official NYC Meet Sat June 2nd 2012

Sorry for the late notice but I would like to attend. I would bring: "Breadboard" (plexi-glass covered) spud tube amp based on Doug Savitsky's Electric Avenue, Rotel CD player, and Beyerdynamic DT-880's (600ohm).

Trying to find a 2A3/45 DIY Tube Headphone Amp project

You will have to go two stage given the low mu of a 45 or 2A3.  I built a single tube 171a (keep this tube in mind too - globes are cheaper than 45) HP amp and it was fine for low night time listening - you will not rock the phones out with this.  A single tube 45 with step up input transformer...

    The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I'm listening my new 600ohm 880's and pretty crazy about them.  I came from AKG-501's, Stax SR-303's, AT AD-900, and now these 880's.  I've built many tube amps for these different HP's and lately been enjoying an amp based on dsavitsk's Electric Ave (10K:600 OPT)( http://www.ecp.cc/SSS.html )...

    FS: Audio Technica ATH-AD900

For your consideration is a set of Audio Technica AD-900 headphones.  I have enjoyed these for 2 years and they were purchased approximately 4 years before I bought them.  It’s just time to try something new.  Never an issue – they sound excellent.  Physically I'll just note the light...

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

I see the bare driver (inside cup) with center panel covered with tape is the latest mrspeakers suggestion but I'm not even caught up with the stiff craft felt that replaced the stock white felt :-)...  What are you folks doing to adhere the craft felt to the driver frame?  I was going to use a...

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

Working on Rastapants mods at the moment and for the first time I feel I'm getting closer to good sound.  The one element of the mod that I was not able to try is the replacement of the stock white felt over driver with "stiff craft felt".  Went to Michael's tonight and very sure I have what was...
