New Balanced Schiit Amps? The information and anticipation thread.

Quote: If a $750 amp is competitive with >$1,000 amps, then the cost of the cable isn't a deal breaker, imo. Just something people need to watch out for.

Headphones you regretted buying the most

Quote: That's a good mentality to have. If you learn from every mistake and make the most of every situation you needn't regret a thing.

Sennheiser HD 700: Officially Unveiled at CES 2012!

Quote: So the smell of your mother's cooking, freshly cut grass, sea salt etc aren't evocative for you? I'm not convinced.

Headphones you regretted buying the most

Quote: Are you sure? My main complaint about the CX300 was the overwhelming mushy bass.

Sennheiser HD 700: Officially Unveiled at CES 2012!

Quote:   By "ignoring all others" I was more referring to the people who say sound quality is the be all and end all with headphones. Apologies for the ambiguity. I wouldn't say companies like Audez'e and Hifiman don't pay any attention to aesthetics. They could certainly look a lot...

Sennheiser HD 700: Officially Unveiled at CES 2012!

I'm with Saintly on all accounts. If I'm spending a lot on anything I expect a well rounded product. It isn't enough to maximise one attribute and ignore the others.

Was sort of thinking in terms of cost no object, but yeah, Drobos are very expensive. To be honest, if it fits on a single disk, I'd just RAID 1. Simpler the better when you don't want failures.

    Vinyl Record Players?

Is it the all analogue signal path that gives vinyl the attributes everyone loves or simply the inherent sound of vinyl?

    Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones

That makes sense, I guess. Nit picking again, but one would hope the cost of a rig like that would make it more than a little bit more enjoyable.

BLIND TEST: 128kbps mp3 vs Lossless

Quote: Maybe so, but even then, is it a fair test if you intentionally choose music that you know isn't going to sound much different? You can't just compare 128 kbps vs lossless with one track whether it's a good or bad recording, either. Anyway, thanks for posting. Was pretty...

    Bedside \ Night stand rig?

Quote: Sounds good to me but the only point of reference I have is my Xonar Essence sound card.

    Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones

Quote:   How can you compare the number of iBuds, which come with iDevices with HD280s? Surely it's only fair to judge them against similarly priced upgrades? I don't see that many people out and about wearing Senns but I know a lot of people that use them behind closed doors. Perhaps...

New to Vinyl - Any Hints or Tips?

Looking somewhere in the range of £300.    I was looking at stuff like the Pro-ject Genie but from what you've said, going with vintage stuff might be a better idea?    An integrated amp isn't on the cards. I'll primarily be using whatever I buy with my Asgard and occasionally via line...

Pictures metaphoring the sound of your headphones

Saw this as an excuse to mess about in photoshop. Each is exaggerated but is a metaphor for how I interpret the sound of each respective headphone from my own experience.    HD650:   HD595:    Shure SE215:   iBuds: Image credit: Graeme Weatherston

    Monster breaking up with Beats

Quote: I'll agree with you in that they did bring a significant number of people into a market for more expensive headphones. That is a good thing, yes, but what frustrates me is that their marketing assures purchasers that what they're buying is a "studio" or "professional" headphone...

Will an external DAC make my laptop sound better in amplified shelf speakers?

Personally, I doubt a $100 DAC would give you a significant boost over the Sound Blaster you had. If you think the difference in sound quality between your laptop and your old Sound Blaster card is worth $100, then go for it.

Schiit DACs (Bifrost and Gungnir down, one to go)? The information and anticipation thread.

Quote: It's useful to have adapters lying around anyway and the I have heard people use "Mac Pro"  for MacBook Pro before, which would indeed need an adapter.

Do you support nuclear proliferation??? If so, why?

Quote: I guess I should've seen that coming. I've been a lurker for a while and some of the things even the more rational people come out with can be astonishing. I look forward to experience defying logic as I fall further into this money pit of a hobby.
