Thanks! I was thinking more like headphone adapters but got the correct wiring from iBasso support - simply connect R+ L+ and GND to the respective pins. This will be for my new Stax SR-003 MKii and SRM-D10 ii setup.

I wouldn't assume a 4.4mm jack operates in "true" balanced mode. One of the great features of the 4.4mm spec is that is supports both SE and balanced.

It is impossible for the 4.4mm Pentaconn to short unless the socket is damaged. Look at the pin out and you will see the obvious design.

That rules out the ground as the problem. If your temporary solution is to keep the button depressed, you run the risk of the protection circuitry not able to protect a "real" problem. I would ask Cayin to give you another battery module to try out.
