Having had two "2000mah" batteries in modded ipods fail recently and need to be replaced, what I'd most like to see is some means of fitting a more commonly-available, more 'standard' battery type. At some point the custom ipod batteries will cease to be manufactured, I'm sure. And as...- ThinWalls

The data-transfer speed is the biggest limitation on the ipod design, that really gives away its age as 'legacy tech'. It now takes up to 36 hours for me to do a complete initial sync of my entire library!- ThinWalls

Has this been mentioned on here before? Don't remember noticing it. (I've no connection to whoever these people are, not shilling this, or particularly recommending it, honest! Just noticed someone selling an ipod with it on Ebay, and was intrigued by the custom back-plate as much as anything...- ThinWalls

Continue to be exasperated at the idiocyncracies of the iflash. It absolutely seems to be the case that only certain combos of brands/capacities/series of cards will work together in the same device. Which means it requires repeated time-consuming experimentation to find which cards will play...- ThinWalls

I wonder if I'm "barking up the wrong tree" with this. Has anyone else experimented with it? But, as I say, the couple of times I tried going even just a few GB over 2TiB (i.e. over 2199GB), iTunes wouldn't restore the thing properly - so I'm assuming that you can't exceed that limit even by a...- ThinWalls

Well, storage manufacturers, like hard-drive and (I now realise, though I didn't really think about it before) memory card makers, use the SI meaning of "k/kilo" and "M/Mega" and "G/Giga" and "T/Tera", etc. That is they go in multiples of 1,000 like units of mass or distance etc. So when they...- ThinWalls

To further update my last post... Experimented with trying to push the FAT32 limit, and it _seems_ that if you go even slightly past the 2TiB (not 2TB) limit, things go haywire. (This is assuming it's not some other problem and I'm mistaking the cause of the issue.) But if I try an iFlash...- ThinWalls

There's a reason I ended up with the above peculiar assortment of different capacity cards (all of different makes). I thought I'd get a 1Tb sd card while Amazon had a cheap offer available, and upgrade a couple of modded ipods. And, Good Lord, it turned out to be _such_ a lot of effort. The...- ThinWalls

Answering my own question from earlier in the thread (in case anyone else finds themselves with the same question), it seems you _can_ go beyond 2Tb with a modded ipod, but only (I think) because of the confusion between Tb, Gb, etc, and Tib Gib units. Got an ipod to work with 1Tb, 512Gb...- ThinWalls

Am seriously baffled by the behaviour of those generic green (non-Tarkan) zif adaptors. Have never managed to work out why they work in some ipods but not others. Anyone know what's up with them? Damn, dropped two modded ipods in a row. Was away from home, had two with me, managed to drop both of them in exactly the same way (ipod lying on the table, headphones on my head, I stand up, cable pulls ipod off table so it falls on floor with a crash - then I do it _again_ with the other...- ThinWalls

I mean these (I think they came in 6gb and 20gb versions, hard-drive based, so in theory upgradable): https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/digital-music-players-nw-nwz-a-series/nw-a3000/specifications The internal hard-drive can be swapped, much as with ipod classics, but I read that it...- ThinWalls

Are there any other old players that can be modded/upgraded ipod-style? A very general, open, question, I know, but was just curious. I remember once wanting one of those Sony 20Gb hard-drive based ones (NWA-3000?), a lifetime ago and not being able to afford it. I've read, though, that...- ThinWalls

I've had no problem getting them to work with various permutations up to 4x512Gb (which comes out as something like 1.86Tb). Just not at all sure if the 2Tb FAT32 (or is it MBR that creates the limitation?) limit applies to the pre-formated size or post-format size or if it is Terrabytes or...- ThinWalls

Nice trick to get a video in a 7th gen housing - always seemed to me that the difficulty in doing that was the slightly-differently-sized clickwheels. The only way I could imagine of getting round that would be if one could combine the sensor part from the 5.5 with the disk from a 7th gen (but...- ThinWalls

I don't suppose anyone will know the answer to this (as maybe I'm the only one to consider experimenting to find out - from just pure curiosity as much as anything), but, in case anyone has tried it... Nice. Wish I could figure out a way to paint the housings in a professional manner. I had a go once with a big pile of spares I had accumulated, but even with sanding them down and using supposed "glossy car paint" from spray cans, the results were really very poor. Just ended up looking no...- ThinWalls

Dropped a modded ipod on the floor and it hit the ground hard enough that, it turned out, the "2000mah" battery shifted inside the housing causing the cable to pull the battery connector off of the logic board. Wasn't obvious at first, as it still seemed to work, but the battery would only...- ThinWalls

I use Media Monkey, but Foobar is probably at least as good. I do wish there was an agreed "generic" format for smart playlists, as there is for playlists in general, such that you could easily export and transfer smart playlists between different music managers.- ThinWalls

Had a 7.5gen, iflash modded, rockboxed. It worked but the "play" button was really unresponsive, had to press it multiple times to get it to register. Ended up swapping the logic board with a different one. Seems as if the original was firmware 2.0.4 and the replacement had 2.0.5. Oddly it...- ThinWalls

Yeah, plastic plectrums (aka guitar picks) seem to be the least-bad tool. Though I often end up resorting to one particular flat-bladed knife in desperation (and resign myself to getting a new backplate, 'cos the old one is going to get a bit bent/mangled in the process). I seem to have ended...- ThinWalls

While looking for fixable ipods came across a weird item on ebay.uk. An Ipod classic with a blackplate clearly marked as "140gb". (Also says copyright 2005 - generally the thick 160gb classics say copyright 2007). Never seen a backplate marked "140Gb" before. I'm entirely aware of course...- ThinWalls

If that's the model number, then one puzzle is why it didn't have an 80gb drive to start with. Could it have previously been downgraded? Still can't say I understand why it would have lacked the search function to begin with. I don't _think_ you can upgrade or downgrade the firmware beween...- ThinWalls

In the end used that 1Tb card to upgrade a 5th gen iFlash ipod, and it seems to work fine in that. Drawback is 5th gens are so slow to sync that I didn't really want nearly 2Tb capacity in one (it was previously about 800Gb), as it will take literally several days to do a full sync of that...- ThinWalls
