Budget portable mp3/hi-res player - recommendation needed
Are there any budget portable mp3/hi-res players you could recommend? I have Sansa ClipZIP with RockBox firmware but the screen is too small for my old eyes. I just need something to take with me while walking and also to test equipment with. Would play mp3 and FLAC files. No need for any fancy...- drabina

Comfortable replacement for NVX XPT100 headphones - recommendation needed
Thanks. I have seen those Monoprice headphones which do look exactly as the XPT100s. I just wasn't sure if they are exact same cans but with a different label. I may just get them and be done with my search. I definitely need a closed back. No need to get better sound quality because they are...- drabina

Comfortable replacement for NVX XPT100 headphones - recommendation needed
My NVX XPT100 cans just bit the dust. One of the drivers is no longer functioning and I have tried pretty much everything to get it working without a success. I am looking for recommendation to replace the XPT100 which were my favorite headphones. The reason why I liked them so much is the...- drabina

NVX XPT100 no sound from one side
I have the NVX XPT100 full-size headphones which I like a lot. They have a tons of hours on them but recently I lost one channel. Swapping cables doesn't fix the issue so it has to be the driver or connections within the earcup. I have opened the bad side, checked the wires, reflowed the...- drabina

Taotronics TT-EP01 - anybody else that's not happy with the ANC?
I just finished testing the newly delivered Taotronics TT-EP01 headphones. The active noise cancelling does nothing. None of the background noise was cancelled. The volume got increased a bit when ANC was turned on but that's it. Anybody else that have the same model and experienced similar...- drabina

ear bud/IEM with active noise cancel/bluetooth, with good bass, $50 possible?
I just got the Taotronics TT-EP01 delivered today. The battery was charged and I just finished testing them. I do not know how they can advertise them as having active noise cancelling? The system does nothing but increases volume similar to a loudness button on an amp. I had my two kids running...- drabina

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Well, I guess I will have to try and report my findings. The wi-fi adapter is usb so if I position the raspberry strategically, it could be outside of the case. My new enclosure will have the tubes inside the metal case so it should be separated from the antenna.- drabina

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Has anybody built a source into your SS amp? Something like bluetooth, Raspberry Pi or something else? I have asked this question couple of years ago but did not get many replies. Hopefully, this has changed since then and somebody can provide some feedback. Ultimately, I would like to put...- drabina

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Would that work as a single piece drop down converter? https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/MEAN-WELL/SLC03C-05?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvGsmoEFRKS8Koqt8Pjkl39FxTMu%2fO%2fe8N2JBpmakm9Lw%3d%3d- drabina

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Would something like that work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-DC-Buck-Step-Down-Adjustable-Converter-6V-80V-24V-36V-48V-72V-to-5V-6V-9V-12V/192525988244?hash=item2cd3717194:g:3vkAAOSwuxFYyQyb I guess with the step down converter, I can move the two LEDs that light up the tubes from the 48V to 5V.- drabina

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Anybody made a Starving Student amp with a built-in source (i.e. Raspberry Pi + DAC running volumio)? Few years back, I have built SS amp but it is not being used much because I always forget to either charge my Sansa Clip ZIP or load new music on it. I would like to put Raspberry Pi Zero W with...- drabina

If you want to hone your soldering skills, I would get Starving Student PCBs from Fred (here on this forum) and build yourself the 12AU7 version of Starving Student headphone amp. I just finished mine in a cigar-box and it is a sweet-sounding small amp. Slightly off-topic but still relates to...- drabina

If there are any mods available, your soldering skills have to be better than "ok". This board has all SMD components which are tiny. No regular caps to replace like the other boards. I would say, use it the way it is as the performance/price factor should be good if you paid only 3.8 Euros.- drabina

Starving Student PCB's
I am not an expert, but I would populate only half of the board and use one tube and one MOSFET. No need to have both tubes and MOSFETs running to process the same signal. You would spend only half of the parts money. That of course unless you want to rebuilt it later for stereo use. Even...- drabina

Thanks for replying. I have the D01 version so there are only 3 caps total I could change. Rest is SMC. I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace those 3 caps.- drabina

Starving Student PCB's
That's what I wanted to ask about here on this forum. I need to add wires between tube sockets and PCB (about 2" long). Can I just add single wires or they should be twisted in pairs (or all)? Also, once in the enclosure, the wires are not going to be stretched but cramped. Would that cause a...- drabina

I do not know the answer to your question, but you can get PCBs from Fred. Check this thread for more info: http://www.head-fi.org/t/664191/starving-student-pcbs I have ordered two and they arrived fast (though remember that based on where are you located, they may be shipped across the...- drabina

Need budget DAP that will play nice with Starving Student amp
There was a thread on RB forum from 2006 (I think) that was about a streamlined UI but I do not think it went anywhere. I like RB for its super fast startup but I do not like the tons of options in main menu. Sansa's original firmware is nice with main screens for audio, books, radio, etc that...- drabina

Need budget DAP that will play nice with Starving Student amp
Yeah, it was kinda funny to look thru the headphone jack and see world on the other side thru openings near the USB port. :-) As to the RockBox, I still haven't decided if I want to keep it. It would be nice if they had a streamlined version of UI without all the fancy settings and options. The...- drabina

Need budget DAP that will play nice with Starving Student amp
I was at local BestBuy store today and they had few left over Sansa Clip ZIPs for $29.99 so I bought one. It is the 4GB version but I have plenty of microSD cards to extend its storage. So far, I have RockBox'ed it, charged the battery and uploaded few FLAC albums into the onboard memory. Will...- drabina

Comfortable closed cans with clean sound for rock and classical music with $120 budget?
Thanks for recommendations. I have checked the recommended cans and I do like the NVX XPT100 headphones but the Beyers DT 770 also look good. Actually Beyers look more comfy (on the picture). So that brings me to another question: are the DT 770 250 Ohm worth double the price of XPT100?- drabina

Comfortable closed cans with clean sound for rock and classical music with $120 budget?
Any other recommendations? I would prefer not to mod and buy new vs used. It is easy to go over a budget when you have to factor shipping for the replacement parts like ear cushions or headbands.- drabina
