SoCal TOTL Electrostatic Festival at The Source AV, Sat Feb 25 11-6

I've been really busy since the event, but I'll post some impressions once my week calms down a bit.

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I'm using a Woo Audio WA7 (1st generation) to power my HD 700's with the upgraded Electro-Harmonix gold-plated tubes and the solid-state power supply.  One of these days I'll need to get the tube power supply as well as get my amp retrofitted to the newer version.  That said, it's a very good...

☯️ Cavalli Audio presents The Source AV’s Summer Series 2016

I probably should've asked this when I was on the phone with Wayne, but I forgot.  How is source material going to work?  Should we bring a flash drive with what we want to listen to?  Will there be any analog sources (vinyl or reel to reel tape) setup?

    Audeze LCD-X

Yeah, the bass of the LCD-X is pretty tough to match.  It's not overpowering by any means (as in basshead headphones).  It's just able to teach very low with very tight control, resulting in very articulate and heavy-hitting, yet accurate bass.

    Audeze LCD-X

Hmm I don't know.  I have only spent a bit of time with the Elear, but it was very clearly designed to be a warm headphone.  The LCD-X is designed to be pretty neutral.  I don't want to say that one is better than the other, but I really don't think they were designed to do the same thing.

    Audioengine A5+ Review

That's great!  I'm glad you're enjoying your speakers!

Awesome!  Make sure to put them on some proper stands to get the most out of them.

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

The widest soundstage that I've heard in headphones that I can remember is a pair of HD 800's powered by the work-in-progress Cavalli Liquid Tungsten.  That really was a magic pairing...

    CanJam SoCal 2017 (April 8-9, 2017)

I'll be there!   Quote:   Pros and cons.  Orange County is easier when it comes to parking, but there's a lot more to do (and eat!) in LA.  As a bonus, since I would hope most people here are music fans, LA has one of the best music scenes in the world, Orange County on the other...

☯️ Cavalli Audio presents The Source AV’s Summer Series 2016

Oh shoot, I didn't realize this was happening today.  Oh well.  Hopefully I make the next one!

    Audioengine A5+ Review

I have not personally heard that DAC, but reviews on it seem to be very good for the money, and it has all of the connections you need.  I'm sure that the D1 would beat it, but yes, the E10K Olympus should do everything that you need.

    Audioengine A5+ Review

Yes, if the Schiit equipment is not an option due to price or availability.

    Audioengine A5+ Review

Schiit actually ships to Canada from what I know, and they have a dealer in Vancouver as well.   They only sell the Modi 2 Multibit though, which is the best version of the Modi 2, but probably more than you want to spend.   http://www.headphonebar.com/schiit-modi-multibit/   I did not...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Keep in mind that there are full range loudspeakers out there that can go quite low, sometimes even lower than a small subwoofer.  I listened to plenty of two channel setups that could dip quite low.  That's not to say that a subwoofer couldn't help them even more, but it was certainly not...

    Audeze LCD-X

I don't have the tube power supply yet, so I can't speak to which tubes are best for it, but the Electro-Harmonix Gold Pin tubes in the amp definitely make a difference.  Keep in mind that the amp and the power supply do not use the same tubes, as your wording implied.  I've heard that they...

    T.H.E Show Newport 2016 June 3-5

I'll be there all three days, though since it is shortly after CanJam, I tend to spend almost no time looking at headphone equipment and focus on loudspeaker setups.

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I think that HD 800's can sound considerably better, mainly due to their soundstage (not that the HD 700's are lacking in this department) but they take a summit-fi amp to do that.  I was lucky enough to spend some time with the Liquid Tungsten prototype at CanJam recently, and that amp with the...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

"Man Next Door" is an even better track off of Mezzanine for checking sub-bass (though Angel is a great pick as well).   HD 700's can definitely do sub-bass.  Are there headphones that can do it better?  Yes, of course (LCD-X for example), but I've never felt like the low end was lacking too...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Probably in-part because amplifiers are advancing far slower than DAC's, especially in the loudspeaker world.  The popularity of high-end headphone amps is relatively recent in the grand scheme of Hi-Fi.  On the other hand, high-end loudspeaker amplifiers have been around for ages.   I'm not...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Uh, I think you mean instrumental, not acoustic.  Acoustic music means the majority of instruments used are acoustic.  Trance is a genre of electronic music.

CanJam SoCal 2016 Impressions Thread (March 19-20, 2016)

Alright, time for me to finally post some impressions.  I've been insanely busy at work and have had a bit of a cold, so I haven't really gotten around to this.  At this point, I doubt I have anything to add that hasn't already been said, but here are some quick impressions:   Cavalli Audio...

    Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

I have never heard anyone complain about the comfort of the HD 700's, even those that have bashed its sound signature.  They are easily one of the most comfortable headphones that I've ever used.  I often use them over my LCD-X's when not doing critical listening just because they are 1000x more...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Well, if you're moving the cables around a lot, you're bending the metal, so if it's not made well, it's just going to split overtime.  This is one of two reasons that there is a "proper" way of coiling cables for storage (this is mainly a thing in pro audio where you're frequently moving long...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Eh, I think headphones make it easier and cheaper to be absorbed by the music, but a properly setup speaker system, while costing much more and taking much more effort properly, will reveal just as much detail.  In fact, I would say that filling a room with sound is a much better experience...

New Grace Design m920 DAC/amp with DSD decoding

I have heard the HA-1, and it is an excellent unit, but I haven't spent extended time with it.  From what I have seen and read, my guess is that the m920 has a stronger DAC section, but a weaker amp section.  This is just a guess though.
