A look at materials for magnetic shielding
>>No way. The electrons to go that rod and then what? They need to close a loop so they have to travel through dirt, to get to the origin.<< So that means that radio is also impossible because the electrons go to the transmitter antenna and - then what? Everyone keeps focusing here on 60 Hz...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
Oh, so, I see, an AM radio station only needs an elaborate buried radial grounding system so that the DJ doesn't get a shock when he touches the microphone. Well, I'm sure all the owners of AM stations will be glad to hear that they don't need to maintain their ground systems anymore, all...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
A lot of noise coming in through the AC power line does **NOT** originate at the powerplant. It is coupled to the hot, neutral or both inductively and or capacitively somewhere along the route between the powerplant and the audio device being powered. For example, if someone is operating a...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
...You do realize that this thread is meant to deal with finding materials to reduce the 60 Hz noise inductively coupled into nearby audio circuits from an internal power transformer..... and not as a discussion of grounding, power lines or anything of that sort? Some DIY amps I have made had...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
First off, the assumption is that the signal ground on high-end audio gear is isolated from the safety ground of the AC power distribution system, so signal ground is not connected to neutral or ground in your wall socket. At ~300 kHz the impedance of an 8 ft rod driven into damp earth...- milosz

1964! You're even older than I am. FYI I never said that a good earth ground was useful in improving AC quality, I don't know where you got that impression. I have found by experience that using a (relatively) low impedance connection to a decent earth ground can help "drain off" certain...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
The ground rod is essential for my MW and HF listening. And I've never seen an FM studio that did not have it's ground system referenced to earth ground at some point. (I've had a broadcast engineering license so long that when I got it, the FCC still called it "1st Class" license. I did FM...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
RE: RFI Typically there is no internal source of RFI inside an audio component (there are exceptions, see below) - most EMI is capacitively coupled from the outside at high frequencies. The typical aluminum enclosure used for most audio gear does an adequate job shielding the stray RF that is...- milosz

A look at materials for magnetic shielding
Some headphone amps that I've built have had very low -but audible- levels of 60 Hz hum when the level was cranked way up. No one listens that way- with the volume at 11- unless you have VERY inefficient 'phones like HE-6 or K-100's, and with those inefficient drivers you won't hear that...- milosz

I showed up and there was no space for me to set up. I RSVP'd that I was bringing gear, but when I arrived there was no space to set up, no organizer around that I could find. Good thing I didn't go to the trouble of bringing my DIY T2. Take me off this email list.- milosz

I plan on bringing my HE-6 with the Beta 22 w/ onboard Curryman DAC and Amanero USB interface that I built. Here's a picture of the amp chassis with the DAC inside a copper sub-enclosure for shielding the analog circuitry from the digital RF of the USB interface and the DAC. Curryman DAC is...- milosz

I'll be there. Interesting that you are having this at ESS. I've done some projects with them and gave two workshop there, been involved with them since 1990, although haven't done anything with them for like 10 years. I might bring an amp or two that I built.- milosz

The Beta 22 Thread
You could post to the AMB Beta 22 Forum, they can better advise you as to what would be best with IEMs. I never use IEMs, they hurt my ears, I can't wear them, so I have not explored using any of my headphone amps with IEMs. http://www.amb.org/forum/beta22-amplifier-f12.html- milosz

The Beta 22 Thread
AHHH! IEMs! Well, it depends on the gain that the Beta 22 was built with. Generally, it's a fairly powerful (5 watts or so) amplifier and that sort of thing isn't usually suitable for IEMs. My Beta 22's are built with a gain of 5. I think this is to much gain for IEMs. A gain of 2 would be...- milosz

Why are there no 'high-end' 1/4" headphone jacks!?!?!
Yeah that Lumberg looks nice and I bet it's well made but it's 3.5 mm not 1/4" my HE-6, LCD-2 and HD-800's won't plug into a 3.5 MM jack and using an adapter kind of defeats the purpose. Maybe I'll have to start manufacturing one myself. I have in mind one that has a larger contact area...- milosz

JansZen developing electrostatic headphones - crowdfunding info...
Here's another CAD image. The 3-circuit ring-tip-sleeve plug shown in the picture above worries me, can't have polarizing voltage on something like that.
