Pioneer HRM-7 Studio Monitor Headphones Discussion
I still have my K553, my latest mod to it improves the soundstaging dramatically, though it remains unextraordinary, definitely won't become a gaming-worthy can by any stretch. I have never found the 553 to sound veiled, Sennheiser's HD6MIX and the old Beyerdynamic DT440 do, as examples. Stock...- Mad Max

Ultrasone PRO900
All earpads squish with time and use just like pillows, there is no avoiding this except by simply never using your headphone. Pleather always disintegrates, it is simply a question of time. The previous generation Pro900 looks better suited to maintenance. You can order spare parts from...- Mad Max

Pioneer HRM-7 Studio Monitor Headphones Discussion
553 MKII, because you want speed and details, but the stock earpads hurt bass and treble clarity, I recommend using oval brainwavz pads for best sound, not the circular XL pads, the oval pads have a bigger ear opening and that matters. I also strongly recommend fiberfill and transpore tape to...- Mad Max

Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread
Very minor if you use budget gear, major if you use something more upscale. I've got an Audio-gd Reference 10.32, K701 is in a very different league of fidelity from HD700 out of this amp/DAC unit while hardly any better out of my older, lower-cost gear I still have, and with upscale gear, HD800...- Mad Max

New AKG headphones K175, K245, K275
Some musicians outside of head-fi told me that bass boost sounds better with headphones that have less inherent bass distortion. Last example I saw mentioned was HD800S versus the original, silver HD800. HD800S has higher bass distortion, which sounds more pleasant for normal playback but the...- Mad Max

Audio-Technica ART Monitor Series Refreshed: A2000Z, A1000Z, A900Z, A500Z
The headphone is partly disassembled, the foam rings that sit in there normally for the X or Z versions would obviously get in the way, but the photo is someone else's as I said there, I have not done the detachable cable mod to my headphone. And try real Dynamat if you can, or try sorbothane...- Mad Max

New release - the AKG K553 Pro - featuring a killer Massdrop deal
I am reposting what I shared in the K550 thread. Another fellow showed that he removed the white acoustic filter and taped up the three baffle vents surrounding the driver, a mod that I do not personally recommend. Headphones typically need these. A previous, related post of mine in this...- Mad Max

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!
The filtered vents around the drivers aren't protection, they are tuning holes and the designers use them to tweak the tonal balance, you'll find them in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and quantities in almost all headphones. Some Ultrasones and low-end, lo-fi cans lack them altogether, as a few...- Mad Max

What headphones were completely transformed for the better when you applied EQ?
I don't know about HD700 being pretty, I think my Ultrasones, HD650, T90, and SR325is are much better looking. =p I was agreeing with you until you said HD700 can't do EDM. That's what I like it for most, actually. I love HD700's bass the most out of all my headphones for its quality, but bear...- Mad Max

What headphones were completely transformed for the better when you applied EQ?
Sony MDR-V55, after swapping out stock pads with HM3 pads, changed with some drastic EQ to tame its three resulting 18dB peaks. Super good sound for a low price, but permanently needs drastic EQ after a pad swap for it. Philips A1 Pro is pretty muffled and mediocre without strong treble boost...- Mad Max

Philips Fidelio X2?!
I decided to try out my AD900x's stock earpads and, man, what an improvement in overall sound. Those Philips earpads are suffocating the drivers, but the ATH pads sacrifice bass slightly. Those pads would probably also make X2HR sound more closed, but I modified them to alleviate that entirely...- Mad Max

Focal Listen Professional
I have not checked for the 10kHz peak yet, almost all closed-back headphones have that, actually. I am more sensitive to that peak in some headphones than others, they all vary in intensity. The headphones with the strongest 10kHz peak, if memory serves right, is DT770 and K553. I still have my...- Mad Max

The Hardest hitting Headphones are.. ( "The EXTREME BASS Club")
HD25 has rumble for me, M100 has more. More midbass and subbass, the most of anything else I own. I get flat, natural midrange from HD25, that's part of what I love about it. Only my Beyerdynamic T50p has close to as much bass as M100, but the VModa is still noticeably more, freaking bass...- Mad Max

Focal Listen Professional
I picked up one of these and I'm enjoying it. I somewhat dislike the wooly quality, a little woolier than Sennheisers tend to be. Oh, then I take an earpad off and see the big foam disc over the driver. Oh boy. Pretty good sound overall, though I'd like more treble clarity, the isolation and...- Mad Max

Grados aren't as finicky as Ultrasones in general, if you ever try those. Or HD5x8 and HD5x9, their soundstaging suffers badly if placed wrong.- Mad Max

How'd you position HD25 over your ears? I've never gotten ear-piercing treble from it and especially a lack of subbass. My AD900x and K701 lack subbass, HD25 does not to my ears, and I also have M100. M100's resolution isn't up to par with HD25's, either. I also modified my HD25 many years...- Mad Max

I just picked up a used X2HR to see what all the fuss around this one is about. Super nice, should improve with much bigger velour pads, I'm guessing? Also, this was a great deal.- Mad Max
