Grado SR80i vs Audio Technica ATH-M50
Recommend the Grado 60s. Buy a set of the replacement 80 pads and you'll essentially have both. Since you are just starting some experimentation will be fun. If you listen at full volume or anything close you won't be a Head-Fier past your 40s because you'll need hearing aids. Take it easy on...- Moocher

Headphones for college dorm
I haven't read about headphones for quite a while since I'm on an IEM kick, so I don't know what the current thinking is, but you might look at the Beyer DT770 80 ohm version. Excellent isolation.- Moocher

Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones
There are a few almost-dead ancient old farts around, but we don't seem to pay as much attention to bass as you youngsters. Mooch- Moocher

Some advice about Grado headphones
Unless your ears are very large the Grado bowls should fit around your ears. With any Grado cushion some claim scratchiness. I've never had a problem, but I always wash mine first in mild soap and water. The Grado 80s come with the bowls and the 60s with the comfies. I tried both with my 60s and...- Moocher

Blues & Jazz -- Best Headphones?
I'd recommend against the AT AD900 for blues, though they are good for jazz. For blues, i recommend the Grado 225, 325, or RS2. Mooch- Moocher

Keepin' it simple, but ripping cd's to Apple Lossless...
I rip to lossless first and then either re-rip or create lossy from that. Afterward I use different playlists to keep them straight so that I can transfer to iPods, etc. Mooch- Moocher

Good headphones with no amp
I've had the Senn 580s and the AT AD900s. I listen almost entirely to blues. Neither of those headphones worked for blues. The Grado 225, or even a lower model, will knock your socks off - without an amp. Grados are wonderful for blues! Mooch- Moocher

Looking for Headphones with Great Soundstaging/Sharp Transient Response
I, too, think the AD900s might be what you are looking for. I sold mine, though, because they weren't the right headphones for blues. The soundstage was amazing and they were terrific for other genres. Mooch- Moocher

Yes. I loved them with everything. You may want to spend some time on avsforum to find a sub that will work. There should be a thread or three. Mooch -
Do all closed back Headphones make ears hot?
This is a very individual thing. I find any closed phone, most open circumaural, and any on-ear leather or p-leather pads make my ears hot. My best luck (other than iems) is with Grado comfies. It seems that a lot of head fiers would probably disagree with me. That's okay. My ears work the way...- Moocher

Cans that won't smash my big ears
Grados have an easy-to-bend design and with some fiddling they can be bent/adjusted so that they put little pressure on anyone's ears. I also have a large head and I find Grados with comfies to be comfortable once adjusted. They also stimulate less sweat than most other headphones I've owned...- Moocher

Simplifying my DAP/PMP usage...Sony/Zune/Apple Arrrrghgh!
Given that you have an iPhone, I think a refurb Nano might be the solution. (Jeez, I really stepped into the sh** now.) It's small, light, compatible with the iPhone, and with an LOD the sound is good. It isn't the ultimate, but it's cheap, easy, and small. Note that not everything I read about...- Moocher

Going from IEMs to full size headphones: what to expect?
A standard recommendation at your price level is the Alessandro MS1, which has a mellowfied Grado sound and sells worldwide for $100. If you don't like them they should be easy to resell. Do a search and see what others say. Here's their web site: Alessandro High-End Products: Music Series...- Moocher
