Pictures Of Your High End System (Please see the first pages for examples of what should be posted here)

Uber-like, and granting top honors for your combination of clean & cool aesthetic. Wow! Really sweet Harbeth setups up in here too!

    The Stax Thread III

I listen with my girlfriend a lot, and having an amp with 2 Stax jacks and both a 009 and 009S is freaking awesome. Most ladies don't have the patience or inclination to sit and listen tethered like this, but we both enjoy it a lot. I also have a very high-end 2ch setup that we primarily listen...

STAX SR-009S new flagship electrostatic earspeakers released (with impressions)

That's a wise warning. Quick-swapping very similar entities like 009 and 009S can lead to erroneous conclusions. The ear/brain system can adapt to a lot, and your perception of the sound (how good it makes you feel to listen to it) can change significantly after the adaptation period. Or rather...

Mike's Haphazard Unprofessional High-End Headphone Impressions

Yep, I have to admit I show up back in head-fi-dom periodically, and I'm genuinely surprised at the excellent new offerings abound this time. The Susvara and SR1A paired with a top-notch speaker amp seem to be the rage. I have a high-end speaker setup, but I'm not sure transformer coupled tube...

    The Stax Thread III

I posted in another thread with a lot of headphone impressions. It is very slightly on the clear/clean side of neutral. Not a good match for Stellia, which needs an outright warm/sweet amp. It was an amazing match with Susvara. This combo kinda blew me away, only exceeded (and not by much) by my...

Mike's Haphazard Unprofessional High-End Headphone Impressions

Got a stash of great headphones to borrow for a night of fun. My reference system here is: Stax DIY T2 (georgep build) Stax SR-009 and SR-009S headphones Schiit Yggdrasil 2, Audiophilleo 2 with PurePower (feeding mostly CD-quality FLAC files) MSI GS75 laptop, jRiver SOTA Nova V turntable...

    The Stax Thread III

Yep! It's a big advantage of these amps, especially for vinyl heads like me who rarely have a phono stage with XLR out. You still want as high a quality source as possible, of course - but you're no longer shacked to needing XLR outs or being forced to use a Jensen ISO-MAX converter. Like I said...

STAX SR-009S new flagship electrostatic earspeakers released (with impressions)

Can't help on the Yggy vs Holo sonics, unfortunately. I'm curious about the Holo too. When I read the early Holo impressions after I got my v1 Yggy, I kind of wished I had waited and bought the former. But as time passed, I sold my Yggy, and as more time passed, I wanted a quality DAC again - so...

    soundbar recommendations?

Yep - as much as I'd like learn what's the ultimate $1K soundbar for my bedroom TV, this definitely isn't the sub-forum for soundbars.

    The Stax Thread III

If you found the BHSE and XF2 (presumably British/Mullard) too bodied, and other tubes too lightweight/lean, then you'd probably find the Holland/Amperex brown base tubes (xf4 and/or xf5 - you can even mix them in a quad) to be the perfect sonic fit there! That said you have a KGGG so you're...

    The Stax Thread III

Sorry, no ideas on the Jr, never owned nor heard one :( And I'm not a big DAC man either; mostly vinyl. But I've had more success with Yggy / Stax (and headphones in general) than other options (again, my PCM file library is my primary concern). I'm also liking the Yggy 2 over the original Yggy...

STAX SR-009S new flagship electrostatic earspeakers released (with impressions)

As mentioned on the other thread - the 009S is a bit richer and more natural sounding than 009 on the Carbon. As if you injected a really good tube midrange into the pairing - which reveals the 009 / Carbon mids as slightly too dry by comparison. That's why it doesn't pull ahead by too much on...

    The Stax Thread III

You'd really like the 009S on your Carbon. It's a bit tonally richer / warmer than the 009, which is a needed and welcome change with that amp pairing. However on the BHSE things get much closer - still with a slight edge to the 009S overall. On a DIY T2 it flips back to favor the old 009 as...

    The Stax Thread III

Dang, who was saying the Carbon can compete with T2? I love the Carbon and BHSE (they're at the same level), great amps, but there's no mistaking them for T2 level. Yeah it's pricey $$$$$. But for me, it wasn't diminishing returns. Your Carbon build looks really nice (love its look), but I'm...

    The Stax Thread III

Yep you'll hear source differences like never before with a great Stax chain like that. Potentially you may still crave more bass than even a great Stax setup will yield, which would be a sad state to be in, as you noted - there's perhaps no going back once you've experienced the Stax detail...

    The Stax Thread III

I had that same setup - 500V IXYS KGSShv, and a pristine 007 Mk I. I can confirm it's a great pairing. Of the 4 or 5 KGSShv flavors I heard, that 500V was my favorite for the 007 Mk I. The amp is also nice with 009 and Lambda Pro. I prefer the 009, but kinda wish I still had my 007 some days...

    The Stax Thread III

Your new DAC gave you higher gain, but not any more headroom. The KG amps will give lower distortion, better control, and better sound even well below clipping levels. But yes, the difference becomes more profound as you increase listening levels.

    The Stax Thread III

Yes, that's a good path. The 007 and KGSShv (most variants) makes a very good pairing; much better than the older KGSS. It's just that the 007 with KGSShv Carbon is even better - and makes for one of the best setups you can put together short of a DIY T2 (with 007, 009). BTW, the KG amps like...

    Schiit Yggdrasil Impressions thread

True, now that I look back the expense is crazy. That 5x is not even my main turntable in the 2ch system. I got started in vinyl around 2007, when it wasn't quite so bad. I started with a nice SOTA Star / Fidelity Research / Benz rig that clobbered my Meridian G08 CD player for the same cash...

    Schiit Yggdrasil Impressions thread

Bought a Yggdrasil this week - this one's a 4 month-old Analog2 / USB 5 as opposed to the original model I used to own. It sounds pretty damn good 1 day into warm-up. Definitely reminds me of the old Yggy's sound; perhaps a little cleaner and free of the "haze" as others have mentioned...

    The Itch........

I've had the itch countless times over the past 15 years, both headphones and 2ch. When it gets bad, and morphs into a frenzy, is actually when I'm enjoying my current system the MOST, and consuming a lot of music. That's because I'm getting so much music satisfaction, it makes me want even...

    Audio Technica ATH-L5000

@purk and I should go in half & half on a pair. If we both like it, winner of an arm wrestle gets first buy-out option  Seriously though, even with the amazing T2/009 I've been getting very little headphone time in these days with the way my 2ch rig has been absolutely mesmerizing the...

    Audio Technica ATH-L5000

Interesting, thanks! Certainly, the fat tone and voluptuous bass of the L3000 is still interesting today (reminds me of the Tung-Sol black-glass round plate 6SN7 somewhat). Unfortunately, aspects of the L3000 that weren't notable as flaws back in 2004 are now notable in the context of the...

    Audio Technica ATH-L5000

Some 15 years ago now, I had side-by-side used & brand new pairs of L3000. I recall that the new pair was severely lacking the sonic splendor of the used pair, including its glorious bass, until it got some significant burn-in time at high volumes. It was pretty striking, actually - probably the...
