Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

@Dadbeh -- many thanks for this. I enjoy Amir's site but cannot pretend that I understand 90% of what all his graphs and measurements mean -- and even that percentage may be generous. Anyway, it's great to see such stellar results for the Sabaj D5. I've been enjoying mine for a couple of...

I wonder if someone could explain what the problem is with the "Ess hump" in layman's terms - ?

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

Funny you mention that because I wrote a post earlier today touching on just this: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-bluesound-node-2i-streamer.6631/page-4 . The most relevant part to your question, "I do think the solution to getting very...

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

@Researcher -- at the risk of being the one to pose the dumb question -- you're sure the music files you're playing are higher resolution than 48 KHz?

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

Sorry you had to be the one to get the lemon (if that's what it was), bwcgrx! Setting up the D5 firsthand certainly does not give one concerns as to build quality. It is very solidly built, good heft, and pleasingly streamlined. The remote control is cheap plastic, but it does the job. At...

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

I did wind up picking up the D5 from Amazon. bwcgrx's experience gives me a little pause but it's encouraging to hear that others have been using without trouble. As a neophyte I'm afraid I don't have a lot to add in terms of critique other than to say that it sounds very nice indeed, as...

~$200 Headphone amp (or dac/amp) w/ remote ctrl?

If I bumped it up to $300-350, would that open up some options?

~$200 Headphone amp (or dac/amp) w/ remote ctrl?

Appreciate the recommendation -- really want a native 6.35 mm. jack though.

~$200 Headphone amp (or dac/amp) w/ remote ctrl?

Can anyone recommend a good, solid headphone amp or dac+amp *with remote control* for somewhere in the $200 vicinity? Doesn't need to be balanced. Does need to have 6.35 mm. jack. Above all needs to have remote control. Thanks!

@bwcgrx -- Many thanks for the explanation -- very helpful. EDIT -- I'll be interested to read your impressions of the D5 if you care to post them --

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

So, can anyone enlighten me as to how the I2S input is meant to work? Is an intermediate digital converter always necessary?

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

Can someone explain how the I2S input works? If trying to connect to the D5's I2S input from a PC, will you need a USB audio bridge like the Singxer SU-1 ? Does the I2S input provide any advantages over coax/optical/usb?

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

And sounds like you like the D5 with your Senns, which is good. I have a pair of 660s, but also recently splurged on an Audeze LCD-X (the $1,200 package sans travel case seemed a non-insane price to me) so I'd be curious to hear from anyone who tries the D5 with planars as well --

@Dadbeh -- curious, what headphones are you using with it? And are you using the balanced or the single-ended output?

Sabaj D5: the DAC that is unquestionably a digital to analog converter

I'm wondering how the Sabaj D5 may compare to a couple of other options in the similar $500 range -- (1) Monolith Desktop Headphone Amplifier and DAC with THX AAA Technology (Dual AKM 4493 DACs & Dual AAA-788 Modules), and (2) Topping Full Balanced DAC Headphone Amplifier DX7S 2ES9038Q2M...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Anyone using the 300R with Qobuz and UAPP? I'm often getting error messages from UAPP about 'unable to decode in time' leading to incredibly annoying pauses in playback. Anyone know of a setting in UAPP that might help that? I've fiddled with some of the buffering settings but anything I...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Just so I'm clear, you're using UAPP and still outputting through the 2.5/3.5mm jack, not the micro-usb, yes? Steve -- I don't want to stir controversy ('cause I know it's very controversial in some circles) -- but what do you think of MQA? I have the MQA plug-in as well with UAPP. Can I hear...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Steve -- can you explain what the advantages of using UAPP are if you are not outputting audio via the micro-usb port? I've used UAPP extensively with my Samsung tablet and think it's a terrific app. But I do output via the usb port with link to a Dragonfly Red in that case. If I'm listening to...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Fair points. And while the 300R is very new to me, like you say, it's a product that several years old now. My main worry is with apps like Tidal and Spotify updating and then becoming unusable. I turned off auto-update, but Play Store still seems to want to update may apps.... I may be missing...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Is that what that black strip is on the back? I was wondering! I mean, I ordinarily put the 300R down on a table when I use it. That necessarily covers up the back. I agree, some questionable design decisions. Pioneer's refusal to allow for Andriod updates is pretty outrageous, actually. I...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Sorry to sound so terribly ignorant -- but other devices can interfere with wifi reception? I was using the 300R in close proximity to my Samsung tablet -- like, less than a foot apart from one another, though I didn't notice any wi-fi connection issues on the Samsung. Do you think having them...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

@zombicube -- Wow that's pretty distressing to hear. The iffy wi-fi is becoming a source of concern for me -- probably about 80% of the time, I'm using the 300R to stream Tidal (or possibly Spotify) -- only about 20% of the time am I listening to my own ripped FLAC files... I can definitely go...

    Pioneer XDP-300R | Twin DAC ES9018K2M | Balanced Out | Android | MQA | 2x MicroSD | WiFi | AptX

Does anyone else experience the 300R's wi-fi connection cutting out at random intervals? I've recently noticed that, while streaming Tidal, my 300R sometimes loses its connection to my wi-fi network. Usually it picks it back up in the matter of a second or 2 -- and I guess the buffering is...

Thanks very much for these links. That 2.5mm cable from Oidio migth be the ticket -- looks like they come in around $54USD vs. the $80 from Corpse Cable. Edit -- with shipping to US looks like it's closer to $67...
