    Age and the audio journey

I would add that one of the weirdest sensations in that test is the way my hearing just cuts out at 15kHz even though the numbers keep climbing : it didn't feel so bad in the bass test but that might simply have been my amp : I'll leave that to the engineers.

    Age and the audio journey

Hi All, When a certain engineer started making waves re the markup on audio gear, one of his biggest gripes was that men who were well past 50 were making calls on some very expensive audio gear despite the fact that they couldnt possibly still hear many of the frequencies a CD is...

    FiiO FH1 || 1 Dynamic + 1 Balanced Armature dual drivers Hi-Res Audio certified

Hi All, I don't post on HF very often these days, but I cant pay these IEMs any higher compliment than to tell you that I've just ordered a second pair. Please ignore my sig - I'll fix it when I get around to it, but the sum total of my headphones at the moment is a pair of FH1, the...

    Audio Technica ATH-M60X

Lachlan now works for Minidisc here in Australia FWIW, even when I don't agree with his opinions, I find Lachlan very articulate and he's clearly a passionate head-fier - don't hate him for getting paid to listen to headphones ;)

    Sonic Sense Pro Audio

OK - necroing an old thread to point out that the Soundcloud sound demos are still there, as are the YT vids - I don't know of anyone else who offers free WAV downloads of their demos, even if I remain dubious as to how valuable it is when I'm not listening to the demos on the target headphone...

    Audio Technica ATH-M60X

(Not for the office - link contains profanity) OK - don't shoot the messenger - this is more rant than 'review' but Zeos is clearly smitten. Probably the only reviewer who uses ' whoosh' to describe an attractive attribute in the sound of a headphone, but that's one of the few terms I can...

The HiBy R3; The New Double Dac R3 PRO on Sale Now !!!

OK - as I've said before in this thread, I'm a dinosaur, but my *understanding* is that this is now fully funded and Hiby are manufacturing and shipping the R3 from orders Kickstarter passes on to them (yes/no) ? So to get one, I just 'pledge' 189USD (+10% GST for Australian delivery) and...

Does your laptop have an optical drive ?

OK, this isn't another 'The CD is dead !' rant, but I cant help noticing that even the pricier laptops available now often come minus an optical drive - seems like some odd penny pinching IMO but I guess if they can save a few bucks it all adds up. It also leaves laptops with a slimmer. lighter...

FiiO Q1MKII-Apple MFi Certified DAC & Amp, Native DSD Support, XMOS USB DAC chip, DAC AK4452, 20 hours

Doh - I haven't messed around with any of that as I read that Windows 10 (actually 8.1) had fixed earlier issues with Windows Audio. I'll download ASIO tonight and give it another shot - thanks for the heads up.

FiiO Q1MKII-Apple MFi Certified DAC & Amp, Native DSD Support, XMOS USB DAC chip, DAC AK4452, 20 hours

Hi All, I have a bit of a curly problem - curly as in annoying-but-I-don't-think-its-Fiio's-fault ;) Ran a quick Google search to no avail and I'll go back over this thread when I get the time but for now I have a very simple question : <B>is the correct driver for my Q1 MkII...

Model No for thse Comply tips ?

In the wake of an overwhelming response (!), I'll make it simple for anyone else who needs tips for these IEMs (including the Momentum In-Ear), Sony has a reasonably priced IEM with tips that are *perfect* for the Senns (I actually think they fit more snugly than the provided tips):  ...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

I havent had the 'pops and clicks' issues, but the 3.5mm on my DFB is sketchy after a little over 12 months use : I admit that it has lived a hard life in my backpack etc but that goes for every other budget portable DAC/amp I've owned. I dont have to rotate the headphone jack in any of my other...

    New Sennheiser Momentum In ear

Thanks for the feedback re tips - I'm weighing up whether or not to spend the money on a pair of Comply 'Custom Isolation Sennheiser' for my CX5.00 (same housing as the MM) and this is helpful.

    Issues with Schiit Modi

Conventional wisdom seems to be that USB DACs dont need drivers on Mac or Linux/*nix systems, and that has certainly been my experience with every Linux distro/USB DAC I've owned. About the only thing I can suggest seems to have been mentioned earier and that's removing the USB ports /...

ALSA/Pulseaudio : setting default audio sink on *nix systems

Hi All,         I posted on this topic a while back, but I'm still seeting misinformation in various google hits, so I decided that the best approach was an example. Those of us with dongle DACs like the Dragonfly Black will know how easy it is to bump the DAC and lose your connection to...

    New Sennheiser Momentum In ear

    1. I think you'll find that most people here value 'natural' vocals very highly, but you dont seem to see it that way.   2. If you arent getting good bass response from your Momentums, either you have fakes or you aren't getting a decent seal.   I gave up responding to similar complaints in...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

A lot of talk in this thread about how much brighter the DFR is over the Black (more detailed, better separation, but brighter). I watch a lot of Zeos Pantera's sound demos and he seems to have moved from headphones to speakers in the last couple of months. I'd be interested to hear a DFR...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

I admit that I havent bothered to register my DFB with AQ, but its a little disappointing that the 'desktop app' still hasnt been released. No firmware updates ? How about an update to detect whether or not the DF is plugged into a Windows computer and give users some sort of preamp capability...

New Dragonfly Black and Red Discussion

Hi,       OK - lets see if we can state this as clearly as possilbe:      1. You cant buy ANY Android phone - current or otherwise - and expect it to drive the Dragonfly,  Ignore the hoopla re 'any version of Android after 5.xx' : the phone needs a sufficiently powerful battery and the...

Further to my last, if John Atkinson can have his measurements questioned by Audioquest, where does that leave a 22-year old with a PC soundcard and RMAA ?   http://www.stereophile.com/content/audioquest-dragonfly-red-black-usb-da-headphone-amplifiers-measurements#eH2BdJPgTDl7wP5d.97   I...

Unless they're published by someone who has a proven history in measuring gear, I'll be ignoring any RMAA measurements.   http://nwavguy.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/rightmark-audio-analyzer-rmaa.html   I dont worship nwavguy in the same manner as many here, and that critique might seem dated...

    New Sennheiser Momentum In ear

If I can add some perspective based on my time with the CX5.00 and the complaints on the Amazon page for these close cousins of the Momentum, Sennheiser really needed to put more time into both the cable and the design of the right-angled plug. Tepe is holding my cable together but its the...

AUDIO over IP - REDNET 3 & 16 Review. AES67 Sets A New Standard for Computer Audio

Passe ? Given that we're talking communications protocols which have been 'obsolete' for at least 20 years (TCP/IP was never intended to be 'secure' or even particularly robust), I dont get too hung up on whether something is outdated or not.   On a lighter note, it would appear that the...
