Schiit Jotunheim w. Internal Multibit Dac vs. External Modi Multibit

Hey all, So, I bought my Modi Multibit before I bought my Jotunheim for use with a tube amp. In the end I didn't like the tube experience so I ordered the Jotunheim without a DAC module to use together with it. At the time I bough the Jotunheim, it only had a the standard DAC, and I kind of...

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

I was referring to the 1% in Occupy Wallstreet terms, not in sound quality terms. Has that vernacular really faded already? :P

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

Lol, wow are you out of touch. Spending more than a few hundred on any sound system is getting pretty close the realm of the 1%. Certainly nice if you can do it, but it wouldn't be my starting point in recommendations to anyone.

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

IMHO it really depends on the type of neighbors. If you are in a single family home, it's pretty difficult to reach neighbor annoying levels without blowing out your eardrums, unless - that is - you live in an open air hut. If you live in an apartment building with neighbors in the same...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

The power on can be handled by one of those smart triggering power strips, where I can plug the receiver into the sense outlet and the power amp into one of the switched outlets.  When the sense outlet increases in power draw, the switched outlets turn on, and vice versa, so this isn't a huge...

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

I actually find the stuff that does extend down really low to be annoying to listen to, unless I'm having a dance party or something. I find it tough to focus on other stuff when those deep bass notes resonate under my desk.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Hmm. Still no Vidar huh? Did I miss some change? I thought it was going to be released sooner than this. I had really hoped to try a Vidar, but I couldn't wait any longer. Needed an amp for my desktop setup. Bought a used Emotiva UPA-2 on craigslist for only $200 and I'm really liking it thus...

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

Unfortunately I can't comment. I've never seen it before. Haven't seen it discussed anywhere. I'm a little bit of a skeptic. A 10" driver in that small of a cabinet going down to 20hz seems - while not impossible - somewhat unlikely, especially if it is not a DSP sub. Anything is possible I guess.

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

Can't say I've ever spent that much on speakers. My personal experience is limited to the mid range. You know the: "expensive enough that significant others roll their eyes and non-audio folks think I'm crazy, but cheap enough that car-priced audio jewelry owners look down on you." segment. :P

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

Well, as I've said before, the sub is usually the most expensive part. It's fairly normal to spend 2-3x more on your sub than on your speakers and amp combined, to get a similar quality part. Yeah, that is odd about the Dayton not having RCA outs. Do you really need them though? I missed the...

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

Yeah, I was turned off by subwoofer price when I first started as well. It seems to just be a fact of audio life. Subs get expensive in a hurry. The SVS SB12-NSD was recommended to me as a decent sub at an unheard of low price of $399 when I bought it. Subs are almost always going to be your...

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

Those seem awfully big for near field.   My comparatively small SVS SB12-NSD (which is a great deal right now as it is discontinued and stock is being slowly sold out) is totally overkill under my desk.   The gain sits at about 15-20%.   Now, it's "only" rated down to 23hz, but keep in...

Headphones vs Speakers -- an Inconvenient Truth

I hear you. The stands were just a bit short when I got everything installed. It's something I am going to need to figure out a solution to. It's not as bad as it looks though. The camera angle and wide angle lens conspire to make it look worse than it is. Here is a close-up: As you can...

Time to add some speakers... Help me out?

Hey all,   So I am currently very happy with my Modi Multibit DAC feeding my Jotunheim amp for my headphone use (Sennheiser HD650 and Beyer DT770 Pro), but it's time for me to retire my old ****ty logitech desktop speakers, and I am getting stuck, because it turns out I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...

Best budget 5.1 Speaker Kit? (Monoprice? Dayton Audio? Something Else?)

Or,   My house actually came with two KLH 980 satellite speakers attached to the wall and wired to behind the TV...     They haven't been used in some time, but I have it on good authority that they aren't blown or anything, and should still work...   I had originally been concerned...

Best budget 5.1 Speaker Kit? (Monoprice? Dayton Audio? Something Else?)

Hey all,   After thinking/talking about getting a surround receiver for my TV for the better part of two decades, I'm finally getting around to it.   The budget is a little tight, so I can't go crazy.   My research thus far has come up with two contenders:   1.) Monoprice 10565 Premium...

    Sennheiser x Massdrop HD6XX Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV

Audio Nervosa. Sad part is, unless you life right next to a radio tower or some other noisy environment, the benefit of "better" (read: more expensive) cables is going to be entirely imagined.

Schiit Jotunheim Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV

That would be awesome. If not outside of my pricerange, I'd be on the interested list for this. I love my Modi Multibit, but it would be nice to have an entire balanced chain. That would require a new case though, as the existing Bifrost case doesn't have holes for balanced outputs. I wonder...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Maybe a dumb question, but when you are trying to use it on your android device, are you using the secondary USB port with a AC adapter to power it?   The Fulla 2 - by design - draws more power than most mobile devices will be able to provide.   It is thus important to power it from the...

Schiit Jotunheim Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV

True, but if you are relying on a manual switch, you'd be better off just powering off your power amp/ powered monitors, and saving yourself some power while you are at it.   Leaving your speaker amp on all the time just in case you are going to use it is horribly wasteful :p

Schiit Jotunheim Review / Preview - Head-Fi TV

Unfortunately you won't find any balanced amp that does this.     It's not a Schiit limitation.   Just about every audio manufacturer out there relies on off the shelf parts for their connectors, and while there are TRS connectors with internal mute switches, there are no 4 pin XLR...

Does anyone know if there are any downsides to using both the balanced and single ended preamp outs on the Jotunheim at the same time?

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

The pre-outs on every piece of Schiit I've used are volume controlled with the same volume knob that adjusts the volume in the headphones.   Maybe there are exceptions, but not on any that I've used.

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Thanks for the explanation!   Would there be any reason to want to put a preamp like a Saga or a Freya between a Jotunheim and a Vidar?   (Other than getting remote volume control, that is)
